having sorted the chugging/spluttering issues with the van my next problem is when engine is nice and warm say driving for 10miles or so and depressing the clutch pedal i get a whinning noise!!!
there is a new thrust release bearing and have tried backing off cable right to the limit(lift pedal 15-20mm and 1st gear is engaged!!!
what is the problem and can i rectify it without pulling the engine!!!

check the trans for correct amount of oil and maybe even change it to make sure it has the correct grade mine whines a lil bit when it runs low i have the side axle seals leaking

Make sure u r using correct clutch pressure plate for your throwout bearing. I.e. Does your pressure plate have 3 sprung arms on it or is it the type with lots of sprung arms on it?
When I got my bus the PO had put and early 3 arm pressure plate on the clutch whereas it should have had the multi armed type.

It worked, but made exactly that noise you describe until I changed the clutch for the correct type.

Cheers

van came as is with regards clutch etc, just had new thrust release bearing fitted and started humming/whinning when pedal was depressed after engine got warm.prior to this with the old bearing it was fine,no worries.
trouble is i have had no end of hassle setting up me twin ict's,now that they seemed to be fine on sunday i have the decision to make about the humming, engine needs to be pulled and i got to start all over again setting the carbs!!!

sharky.

Just pull it with the carbs on so you don't need to touch them.
I've got icts on mine and I can get it out as one complete unit in about 30 mins after disconnecting the wires and fuel lines etc... Is made a tad easier with access to a ramp though I guess.

This thread explains a bit about different pressure plates / bearings etc...

do you rotate engine at all when you pull engine out cos even if i have a ramp the manifolds/carbs foul on the engine bay if i just drop it down!!

sharky.

I don't just drop it down.
Raise the van on the ramp
Bumper off
Valance off
Wire, pipes, cables off
Strap up gearbox securely.
Unbolt moustache bar / mounts

Lower the van with an engine table on wheels underneath the engine to take it's weight. Unbolt engine mounting bolts. Drag engine out to the back of van. Once engine has cleared the gearbox shaft and then a bit more back, just raise up the van and do a wee bit of jiggling of the table that now has the engine on it. I've definitely never had to take the carbs off to remove or refit the engine.

reading westy richardson's reply on the thread reckons he can remove whole lot with idf's by turning engine 45 deg after pulling lump then lowering it all on a trolley jack.
so i'll take his top tip and give it ago with nothing to loose n see how i get on.
i replaced all gearbox oil with new from jk last summer and i know i have a slight weep from around drive shaft seals is it?? on gearbox but only weeps when i have driven it so cannot see it would of lost muck cos i was off the road for 7 months being resprayed.
leon on here advised the gland nut to be the source of the problem cos his symptoms where the same so i shall take the bull by the horns!!!!

sharky.

anybody know what size socket i need for the gland nut???

Can't remember off top of my head but sounds like a bentley manual would be a big help to you. They are worth their weight in gold.
