Help required fellas , I am sorting my van out and have taken the engine home from workshop so I can strip it down at home.
I will be removing tinware for a clean up and then paint it . Also i will be fitting an alternator .

This is the first time I have attempted anything like this so all help gratefully recieved

Any links or pictures would be ace cheers 8)

Obviously i know how to remove tin !

Buy a German gasket set to replace all the seals and gaskets. Well cheap and easy to do.
New plugs and leads, replace fuel lines.
Remove the clutch to see if you have a flywheel oil seal leak or not.
Oil change.
Check valve clearances.

I'm doing all the above and a few other things over the next couple of weeks so will let you know how I get on fella.

Clean out the inside of the fan housing, the fan and all the cooling fins on the barrels. Gonna be 41 years of s*it in and over that. Will keep the motor cooler when running ;)

Might also be worth changing all the push-rod tubes and seals.

Cool. I'm in the same position as you. I am also thinking of changing to an alternator. Any recomendations would be good.
Thanks.

If your running twin carbs its ok but with the standard solex you will require a stack to raise the carb,or get the grinder out http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=18851" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

dont be suprised at what you find under tin wear ,found a dried out mouse on no4 cylider on a beetle engine once

Mines on an engine stand right now. :)
I agree with Steve, get the best quality seals available, I used German from Machine 7, twice the price, but worth it. If you can beg borrow or buy a compression tester its worth it - if everything is ok and theres no big leaks then you neednt disturb the short block. Take a note of all the tin as it comes off as its a jigsaw puzzle to put back.
Valves are so much easier to set out of the van. Change the plugs - they are cheap enough. Remember to change the o ring seal hidden in the flywheel ;) and take car removing the thermostat on removal of the fan shroud - dont be tempted to rip it all out! Its doing a job in there ;)

As Clem said a compression test would be a good idea at some point. I've got a tester you can borrow ;)

Graze,
i did the same to mine last month. It was the first time i'd done it. Not anything to worrie about really.
