So, did the first long trip in the Dormy weekend gone, 350 miles in 2 days and she cruised happily at 60mph and was able to pull up to 65 without issue. And returned 24.5mpg over the run.

Having driven my fathers late bay (but allegedly the same engine - 1600 twin port as mine is a '71) I definitely have more power and couldn't work out why.

So, dug into the box of history I have and lo and behold in 2004 she had a 1641 with 276 cam.

Back in 2004 it was a £860 engine (ex VAT) supplied by VW Heritage (from their Henfield address - they've moved at least twice since then that I know of!).

So, was this a decent engine back in the day? Is there anything significant about the 276 cam?

I know it is 10 years old but according to adjacent dated receipts it looks like it's done 12,000 miles since being supplied.

Next job is to investigate the ignition and carb, see if I've got anything nice there!

Thanks Alex. What sort of BHP was this engine / cam rated at when supplied?
