Last year I put the van on the road for the first time using Cheap parts. Coil, leads and plugs etc. All year I had issues with fuel consumption. Dead spots no power on hills etc. tucked it up for winter changed oil and changed all parts for quality items. The van came out of hibernation today. First run was down the M4 from Cardiff to Swansea and it didn't miss a beat. Sipped fuel like a nightingale. Last year struggled to get 55 today 65 with a bit left. Although I throttled back as I don't want to blow it. Hills were taken with minimum drop in speed.

So like me if your a relative newbie and are not a millionaire don't skimp use quality. Spend the little extra. :D

half the problem is the vw suppliers carry the **** parts. I have had 2 sets of points fail in the last 8 months, Bosch crap. I thought Beru were cheap parts but its decent stuff in comparison. JK sell them.

A lot of original Porsche parts are Beru, still german made and as good if not better than bosche. I have a set of bosch HT leads and had problems too. I switched to electronic ignition and changed the leads and the problems stopped.

The best value thing you could do in terms or reliability and fuel economy is electronic ignition.

What cheap parts did you put on? I've been running accuspark electronic ignition, coil and leads for over 4 years now, still running great.

Sorry u did say ...... Im tired

Veewee coil leads and plugs. Got rid for VW ones. As I say bus is running much better. Although sipping fuel like a nightingale needs to be put into air cooled context. :D

Like that quote "buy the best, cry once ". I know that Welsh Cardiff/Swansea run too. I was down Llanelli/Tenby way last week. Great advice here, because I used to take the bus up to north Wales on a weekend run. Some of the hills up there (and in my Mid Wales locality) really took the toll. Down to first gear at times. Bus really suffered. Thanks.
