Today I fitted a Just kampers stainless exhaust and 4-1 stainless manifold. Fitted pretty much perfectly without too much hassle. I actually really enjoyed fitting it! Its looks to be a really good quality exhaust.
The hardest bit was re-fitting the flexible tin foil air hoses from the fan shroud to the heat exchangers.
I drove to Dublin airport and back this evening (110 miles) and definately noticed a bit more power. Cruised at 90-95 kph on the motorway with no probs. Over 100 kph, it gets too noisy
For the first 30 miles, there was a bit of a smell of burning rubber (must have been the crumbling engine bay seals) but the smell went away after that. I've heard a rumour that the rear valance tin can get hot enough to fry an egg...definately gonna try that some day.
At the moment, I still have the heat exchangers fitted, but the metal heater tube is rusted out. I'm leaning towards abandoning the heat exchangers and going with j tubes, and maybe getting a propex heater instead. One of the hexs is original vw and one of them looks like a JK replacement. The JK one is badly rusted and holed. The genuine vw one is not just as bad, but is also holed.
Anyway, if anyone is lookin for a stainless exhaust, the JK one is pretty cool.
