Timing

I had very similar problems on mine when i put things back together after changing from generator to alternator. Foolishly i was turning the engine over by hand and i had taken the dizzy out. When put back together couldn't get the mother to start, it banged, popped, smoked, thought i'd shot someone. Told my neighbour of my problems, he said are you sure you have it at TDC as you could be 180 degrees out. Took off rocker cover to Nr 1 cylinder to double check, he was right. Both valves on Nr 1 have to be loose (ie at top of stroke with set gap) to confirm it is at TDC. If you can physically turn/spin them then the valves are in correct position for TDC. Put dizzy back in she fired up straight away, then went about timing her properly.

Don't know if this helps but advice from neighbour passed on...Moral of story, don't turn engine over by hand when dizzy is out as it totally cocks everything up and makes for great confusion when trying to start up again. Lesson learned, neighbour thanked.
