Currently stuck at Taunton Dean on the M5 awaiting the AA due to the discovery of one of my top pulleys halves has sheared in two. Pic to follow. Anyone ant ideas what may have caused it? Belt was fine and the pulley was just laying in the rear apron. I guess it's all the work the van has been doing today, up and down those Devon hills loaded up with family, bikes and camping gear.

Was it an aftermarket pulley? If it was this happens all the time, stick an og one bk on and you'll be happy days :D

Wrong number of shims used?
The unused ones should be fitted under the nut. Iirc there should be 9, theres a thread on here about it.

As Meryldog says, I've seen loads of aftermarket ones fail many due to the poor welding. I repaired one to get a mate back on the road and year or so ago, and AFAIK it's still going strong

Mine did the same two weeks ago, where do you get an og one?

Mine did this too, although it sheared all the way around the centre and the outer embedded itself into the alternator!

Put a post on the parts section,
A tenner should see a gen one winging its way to you.

Cheers guys. Sounds like it temporally got wedged in the alternator casing shearing the outside of the pulley leaving the centre section insitu. Still sitting here waiting for the tow truck!
Will try and source an OG one and check the shims.

I feel your pain!
This happened to me on the return from Briston Volksfest,
it knackered my alternator too.

I am now running a bugpack spin-tru pulley, although will grab a og one at some point.

hope you get sorted soon enough!

I think i got away with minimal damage to the alternator. Just left a couple of marks where it had obviously caught. Casing and spindle still seem to be solid...so hopefully it'll just be a new pulley. Even the belt was in one piece!

Not so lucky with the AA though - 6 hr wait with kids in back, although they (and i) were fine during the wait, just the wife getting angry, depressed, sad, tired, moaning, do i need to go on!

Left South Devon at 11.30am arrived home (180miles away) at 12.30am next day. 13 hr journey on top of having to pack up when it was pi55ing down - had better days!!
