Be careful with towbars as 68 -70MY (removable Valence) are different to 71-72 MY.

I recently bought one for my 70 from JK and it wouldn't fit and they blamed the exhaust I had fitted but to be honest I could not see how it would have fitted anyway without looking rubbish. What you ideally want is an original one like the one below that sits behind the bumper itself and all you can see is the neck but what tends to happen is the brackets get left on the bus as they replace the original bumper brackets and the towbar is useless (as mine is without these brackets)

There was a thread where someone was looking for an original set of brackets in order to get some remade but I don't think it got anywhere.

I have this type of tow bar fitted to our Bay - bumper is off at the moment, so I can take pictures of the mount if anyone needs it - all it really looks like is a plate welded to the side of the normal bumper irons, so that a few extra bolts can be used to fix the whole lot to the chassis, at 90 degrees to the usual ones...

Angus

Would love some drawings or photos or even borrow of the brackets if possible, the originals actually replaced the bumper irons so it sounds like these may be made up.

Not seen you on here lately everything OK :?:

... I bought a tow bar for my 70 from JK ..

It wasn't anything like the westy one though ..

It had 2 vertical brackets hanging down from the captive bolts on the rear of the chassis and I think it also bolts to the bumper brackets ..

It needed a little pursuasion to fit .. ( and an original style exhaust fitting.. good excuse to bin the monza!)

But I like how it looks when its done, as the hitch just hangs out below the bumper ..

If you need some photo's let us know and i'll dig the bus out!

buy a westy one jk is crap there are 3 bay ones early 72 and late the early one is very neat but will
have the bumper brackets missing no doubt. these are easily made out of the original bumper arms

there's one come on ebay tonight.....http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Volkswagen-Westfalia-Bay-Window-Towbar_W0QQitemZ180311097133QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item180311097133&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

im pretty sure thats not westy looks like a siarr towbar to me, i fit towbars for a living, im not a towbar spotter or any thing weird .westfalia are a lot neater and dont go forward of the engine

Fitted a JK one to our van with no problems and looks OK. Would have prefered a Westy one but needed one quickly as I wanted to use our Westy trailer for Vanfest. :) Saw one for sale there at £160, but the wife would not let me buy another one.

Sorry - must remember when I have posted on a thread and promised something!! I'll take some pics tomorrow Graham!

o/t Graham -Yes - still around! - been distracted fixing the ZTT and taking the LSD out of the 7 today - I'm going to make up some of those car-roller things so I can properly work on the underside of the van - I've started cleaning stuff up, so annoyingly I now don't want to use the van if its damp/wet outside until the job is done!

I had a Westy tow bar fitted to my old van. Took me about 2 years to find one! Very rare and a work of art, if you can say such things about a tow bar
Here is the only pic i can find for now.
