Hello all,
Went to see a VW guy today to see why my 69 T2 is stalling at junctions ... and sure enough like he had said over the phone - it seems the carb/inlet is cool enough to the point that petrol isn't burning etc. I'm sure all you experienced guys are saying "here we go again" so please bare with me on this one...

Unfortunately as my VW came over from sunny California, a lot of stock stuff has been removed and to top it all a pancake air filter has been fitted resulting in no hot air from anywhere to heat the intake/carb (I learn fast).

So with a good deal of stuff missing he gave me a list of parts to get (he'll fit them)....

Pre heat box
Rear Tinware to fir pre heat box (swan neck)
Oil bath air filter assembly
Thermostat and bracket
Cooling flaps
Links between flaps and thermostat

"Nightmare" I thought and it has been, as I've spent the last 3 hours trawling through the jolly interweb and found nowt basically.

He did say that an easier solution would be the fitting of twin carbs as the linkage means the carbs/inlet is basically closer to heat and won't fall foul of icing any more.

The problem he said, is (my luck gets better, NOT) I have a single point engine and he doesn't know of any twin carb set-ups for this.

Would really appreciate your input and help on this one guys as I'm at a bit of a crossroads what to do - obviously the twin carb route would be better/easier but like I said I have a 1.6 single point engine.

Cheers in advance!

Charlie

Just in process of fitting twin carbs (I've bought Weber ict) and just looking at jetting them properly

Do you mean something like this?

Twin Weber 34 ICT with a CSP bellcrank linkage would work great if setup properly. Also would give you more power and increase your gas mileage. Win win.

Yes 34's are great little carbs for stock engines, built a couple of 1600's with them and currently doing a 1641 too

Make sure you get the CSP linkage though, only decent linkage on the market.

Are you heat riser tubes in place and not blocked? Could be as simple as getting these cleaned out. These are primarily for providing warm air to the carb, not the oil bath air filter.

All I know is what the VW mechanic told me I needed to get...

or if I could source twin carbs for single point (what I have) then that would do the job too.

As I was having trouble sourcing anything from his list (see my first message) I thought going the twin carbs route would be a lot less hassle.

Anyone know if these carbs are electric choke?

Cheers,

Charlie

Do these carbs come pre-jetted more or less - I've read some old posts from yesteryear where some guys were having problems with to much fuel pressure from the stock fuel pump and some had fitted a fuel regulator like this...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FACET-SYTEC-ADJUSTABLE-FUEL-PRESSURE-REGULATOR-6MM-/282013324393?

which seemed to have worked.

Any thought or personal experience from you guys?

Cheers,

Charlie

Have a read here - converted mine from single to twin carbs! Think you have a single port rather than point opposed to twin port heads

I used a malpassi fuel pressure regulator

I have a lot to learn - I thought single "point" and single "port" were the same thing - one inlet on each head, sorry. When you say "points" are you talking old school as in distributor points?

Sorry for the half arsed questions.

I definitely want to make sure I order the right part.

Cheers,

Charlie

Exactly, that is a great kit, you won't regret buying it😉

I have the above kit on my single port mostly fit and forget as long as you get the jetting right for your engine. Mine were jetted for my engine and I don't have pressure reg and seems ok without (just done 2year stripservice on carbs and are as new), although may add a malpassi soon for a better filter. Much better performance and economy with carbs. Csp linkage is really good, most importantly looks good [emoji2]

That's a very nice looking set-up - I've ordered the carbs and CSP linkage, glad to hear about the better economy... might pay for itself eventually if I drive it far enough ;)

Cheers

The website comes up but there's nothing "clickable" if you know what I mean.

Works for me. You don't get a little hand come up though, just click using the arrow and it'll take you to the images.

For a 1776cc i use 145 mains, 160 airs, f78(been working great, rolling road to prove), 55 idles.
For a 1600/1641- 140 mains, 160 airs, f78 and 52 idles. That should be close to perfect.
