This isn't a debate about whether I should install them or not, and I don't want this to turn into a 'Technical' thread otherwise I'll get told of and the thread will be moved! :)

What I am interested to know is whether or not YOU have them on YOUR engine...

There are 2 reasons I ask:

1) every engine I've looked at recently does not have them, and even Laurie Petit doesn't fit them from what I've read (I have not spoken to him personally)

2) in the UK you can't buy a kit in order to complete this job, parts of it are available only... So I conclude that the demand for it cannot be that great...

The worst side effect I can find is reduced expected engine life... I did less than 500 miles in my Westy in 2 year... So I think I'll be OK on that score, especially as I'm a fair weather Dubber and won't be running in extremely cold (or even hot in the UK!) climates..

Just had a re-build on my 1600cc SP and did not have them fitted.

My 1200cc bug has them fitted.

My bus came from California without them and I still don't have them. Plus the new Scat tinware my new 2110 will be fitted with doesn't have flaps either. My engine builder says people make a mountain out of a mole hill over this.

At the very last, run with the flaps wired/welded in the open position -you need them to help direct the air over the engine

Yep! Spot on. My engine has the flaps fixed inthe open position with no thermostat. It has been this way since the engine was first built 17 years ago when it was in my fastback. Now it is in my bus and in all that time it has never caused me any problems.

Ideally, yes you should fit the full setup, but after 17 years and no problems, I'm not going to change mine now.
