Should be the control for the heater flap that directs hot air under the step through towards the back seats

It’s push/pull - opens and closes flap underneath. Photo below shows joint (yellow represents where the hose goes)
Hopefully that makes sense

Wasn't that information given in one of the two owner's-handbooks which normally accompany these vehicles. I still have both of mine for the 1973 VW Type 2, scans of which are posted in The Samba Literature Archive as follows:

I’m glad you shared that picture. Ours is missing. It’s an M5 thread sticking out, doesn’t willingly move, but I wanted to know what actual VW knob version it should be. Looks like a black, early sixties type one, same shape as the ivory dash knobs on our 63 beetle if I am judging your photo correctly.
