Up the Pyrenees- no bother!

Decided on a New Year trip to the snow in the Pyrenees. Got to Bagniere de Louchon where we were supposed to get a cable car up to a place called Superbagniere. Couldn't get parked so I persuaded the family that a drive up in the van would be no bother...

After 9 kilometres in second and lots of big drops by the side of hairpins I think it was worth it for these pics...

Must admit I'm having a brake upgrade before I do it again though!

First thing I thought, was thank god it was a crosover! I cant imagine doing that on drums all round, it looks awesome dude, i'm not sure i could convince my wife to do that, saying that I'm not sure I could convince myself to do it!

They remind me of a trip we did, as kids, in my folks' bay (also a crossover tin-top Danbury ) when we went up the airy mountains in the French Alps, to go skiing. We used snowchains for the last bit of the route up to the ski resort.
I remember on departure day, for home, we had to be up and away by about 5.00am in order to make the ferry back that night. We bloomin froze coming slowly down the mountain, until of course the engine had a chance to warm up properly! Brrrrr! :lol:

Telegraph hill south of Exeter still scares me.

Still would love to drive the van to Italy in a few years time via the Alps, may take the easy way out and drive the car.

Cheers for the comments all. No bravery involved really, more stupidity-I didn't realise quite what the road was like and there was no chance of U-turn once we got half way. I think you would struggle with drums and snow chains would have been a good idea although we only slid once on a flat bit at the top!

Has to be said that I reckon any van would be fine on a summer trip going through the Pyrenees to Spain or up from Spain as long as you ignore the urge to get to the peaks- I'm sticking to the roads in the passes from now on.

And Doug- just goes to prove that Danbury tin-top crossovers are the top alpine conversion 8) .

I'm going to the pyrenees in August and hopefully snow will ahev gone by then... but who knows with the weather.

Are you bringing your van BrenchK?

If you are there looks to be loads of good camping up there and stuff like rafting etc to keep you well busy. Should be round there again in May so PM me nearer the time and I'll let you know if I've found anywhere really good. There are a couple of good aircooled garages near Toulouse so if you have any bother get towed to one of them rather than a local garage.

I take mine up the Pyrenees too, though not in the winter anymore because I dont like the cold.
