Im now officially desperate. Basically i've had my bus since july and have been doing bits and bobs to it, to get it ready for the MOT, Then it came to the engine. It didn't want to start, then i stripped and clean the carbs, flushed the fuel tank and changed all of the usual service stuff. Still didn't want to play. A mobile mechanic had alook at it but as he had never seen or worked on an aircooled engine before i was off to a bad start already. He couldn't solve it and left.

So, I've had it ticking over just about but very rough and tried to check the timing but to be honest i don't really know what im doing. I forgot to say its a type4 1700 engine.

So please if anyone wants a job and can help, Let me know.

(Very desperate and fed up now, just want it on the road).

Evning, i cant help unfortunately. Is there no one on the IOS that has an idea about aircooleds? Sorry im not a bit closer :( . Just thought id post as theres nothing worse than being desperate for help n being ignored. Good luck n hope you get it sorted soon..

chances are if you hav`nt moved the dizzy then you timming will not be out ,if you have moved the leads , lumpy tickover may mean the leads are not in the right places...Get the firing order correct and your half way there... 8)

Cant really get there and have a look but id start at the begining.

Is there fuel there?? (crank it over and check that you can smell it from the zaust)
If so is there a spark- take a lead of and put a decent spark plug in it. Hold it to an earth with insulated pliers and get someone to crank the engine over.

If both the above are present then its a case of timing, first as above check the leads. Take off the OS rocker cover and remove Number one spark plug so you can get TDC on number one cylinder, turn the crank clockwise until both valve rockers are free and then make sure the piston is at TDC. Then line up your rotor arm on the dizzy with the line on the dizzy body. ive never had an engine that wont fire on TDC if the fuelling right.

If this fails then your fuelling is out. then you will have too look into the carb/carbs see if you can find stock setting instructions.

Hope this helps.

(youve probabley already done all the above  )

Hi
If Chris (slammedkustom) on here cant fit it in try Pete Nice (aircooled technic) who also posts on here, I think he offers a mobile service,

check the pipes have not split or come off the manafolds for the balance pipe ,rubber elbows on manafolds just under carbs.common prob with t4 motors and you can get new ok.back fire will blow them off like when starting and choke not come on ,lean mixture can then cause back fire.check compressions as t4 seem good at loose valve seats no3 cyl(overheated).was it a runner before?

Many thanks for everyones advice and help. I have now got a chap looking at it for me from a posting i put on another forum. Hopefully with some luck it will be running soon.

Just start with the basics. Is it getting air, fuel and a spark? a lack or fault with any of these elements will stop an engine from running or cause poor running as mention. In my experience the key of getting engines to run is the process of elimination. For example if there is a lack of fuel. Is there fuel in tank? silly i know but it happens, are fuel lines blocked or kinked? is the filter (if fitted) blocked? Is the fuel pump working? are the carbs blocked or faulty? It takes time but you get there in the the long run.
