I may be going mad here but, I've always had a 009 dizzy on the van and when you look down on it, no1 firing has always been forward facing, pointing towards no2 cylinder. This meant that both HT to 1 and 2 cylinders were on the right of the dizzy, and 3 and 4 were on the left. Now, I got a vacuum dizzy (bosch one) and firing for number1 is now pointing towards the back right of the engine, towards no1 cylinder. Not really and issue but it means that the HT leads for 3 and 4 stretch across the front of the of the engine.

I'm just wondering why they changed the position of the firing? The mount for the dizzy driving gear is set correctly, running flat across the engine when at TDC.

Number one on mine if to the rear of the vehicle and about 45 degrees to the rhs.

There should be a small mark on the top edge of the dissy body where the cap sits this should be no1.

Which dissy and carb are ou running some of the vac advance dissys are timed for 0 degrees, ie in line with the split on the case at tickover.

The dizzy is genuine Bosch Vacuum from JK, with a standard 34pic Solex.
It just seems strange that holding both in your hands, the rotor is set at a different angle on both, the new one just makes the HT lead to number 4 quite tight as it runs to the front right of the dizzy, just by the fuel pump.

Hiya Mark,

If you examine both distributors side-by-side you'll see why there is a difference. The bottom cog (that engages the distributor drive pinion inside the engine case) is 90* out on a 009. Remember that the 009 was not designed as an automotive distributor but as an industrial application. This orientation of the bottom cog is what results in different rotor positions up top. The bodies of the different distributors have been designed with this orientation in mind.

Matter of fact, over here in the States , if you order a new distributor drive pinion these days you'll be sent one with two grooves in the head. One groove for OEM type distributors and another groove 90* out for 009 type distributors.
