Can anyone recommend what i should keep in my vw toolkit and also what spare items it would b best to carry in case of an emergency or breakdown whilst out in the van . Is there certain parts that are just always breaking or going wrong ?

Mate, this is one of those threads that will be added too by all and sundry. In real life however, my actual spares haul in the van increases year on year. Not too sure how long you’ve had your van but plenty of oil is a great start that you can lessen how much gradually as you learn exactly how much oil you use and in what circumstances, mine uses next to nothing per thousand miles ‘if’ I keep my foot lightly on the gas, it goes up loads if it’s hilly, or I’m stomping on that pedal. Every so often, I change my fan belt as a service item, when I do this, I triple loop the old one that I know fits and pop it into a plastic zipper up type bag and store it in the void behind the passenger seat. I do exactly the same with a couple of plugs, dissy cap, rotor arm, and the longest of the plug leads. These are always great spares because you know they’re working and will fit. A spare coil is always good, one of those new LED headlamps can be a saver too. Then you go down the list of spare cables etc, but I’d sooner just change them if they don’t look great when I’m at home. I’ve got a couple of spare wheel lugs, some electrical connectors with the screw in types and various cable / zip ties and a set of light bulbs and some spare fuses. Some carry a spare starter motor and a trolley jack etcetc. You can go crazy with it all. I also have a fairly small tool kit with an electrical tester and some spanner’s and sockets too. A spare wheel and a jack and a socket just in case. With the jack, just make sure that you can get it under your van when you have a flat tyre, you’ll be amazed how many can’t. Also make sure you can jack it up enough to get the wheel and tyre off, on each corner too. Lots of peeps nowadays rely on a roadside assistance type of membership, peace of mind I guess.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,The list could be endless lol:)

Oil ,brake fluid, fanbelt ,spark plugs, points and condenser even if you have electronic as easy to swop back, spanners, sockets and screwdrivers, mole grips and pliers for a basic get you home set.

WD40 for stuff that should move but doesn’t
Gaffer tape for stuff that moves but shouldn’t
