shit the bed mike did you have to

is that a shoe on the road ? it's evocative of the debris fields the underwater explorers find before they get to the main 'body' of a shipwreck :(

as for getting out of the wreckage of that 'ok'... it's hard to imagine how anybody did unless they didn't have any legs in the first place... a truly horrific photograph, which makes the 'modifications' in the earlier photos all the more poignant, for want of a better word.

like dangerous.

or stupid.

Its ok, he walked ...

I guess his cool clothes were lost forever though? These pics are Roadhouse Tims, so Ive nicked them, but they seemed pertinent to the discussion.

The moral of the story? Sod it, youre legs will be fine whatever happens!

Hey,after that, you would only be concerned that the the clothes were clean. What was worn at the time would have to be full of sh*t, and sartorial elegance would not be your main worry!
Break/loose both legs and dress cool or not break/loose both legs and not dress cool?
Know my preference.

Sorry bit late on this thread and have just seen those pics!! to be honest i am lost for words and that is difficult for me  that is the worst work i have ever scene in my life!! basically someone has done that knowing that it will fail at some point. truely shocking

scary stuff indeed but i see it time n time again, problem is whats cool and whats safe are two different things. you can make something look "cool" but still use basic engineering principles.
sadly that seems to go out the door sometimes and the whole rat look scene doesnt help, i love a perfectly patinaed ride, hell i even own one but there are to many rotten bags of poop driving round. next time your at a show and you see one of these slammed beast driving by listen for the grinding, squeaking suspension cos 90% of them have it.

on a side note you want scary and dangerous... driving down to brighton breeze i went past a convoy of bays, guy at the front had the "twin roofracks with loads of gear on them look" front rack had a 20KG gas bottle on it(thats the 3 foot high jobbie), one bungee cord and it was standing upright, WTF
thats got the wind constantly pushing on it, one form of tie down and its basically a fecking bomb sitting on the roof of a bus, now imagine that came loose and barreled down the M23... doesnt bare thinking about does it?

Pure stupidity is normally the main cause of the accident.Bay owner maybe but thats just total lack of disrespects to all around him!

It is a shame that people need to be unsafe to be cool..classic example for me was the dumped pumkin(KCW Built air ride crewcab).Couldnt fault the work itself but the van hid allsorts of tinworm nasties!.I was going to give $10,000 for that truck(around £6.350 then).I pulled out when i saw it had no floor! Some bloke in france now has it up for sale for £15000 WITHOUT the air..just slammed and narrowed but STILL with no floor!!

Sure is a shame when people chose style over safety

Im sure we are all getting the morrals here and in the other thread...do it right,do it well, seek all the advice you can and if your unsure in anyway.....DONT DO IT YOURSELF 8)

you're absolutely right mate.

i've been flamed on various forums about this to the point where i almost can't be arsed saying it any more, but there's a weird 'chemistry' about the vw scene at the moment that makes it almost unique ? it's a coming together of fashions... one being 'rat look', one being that 'lower is cooler' and the fact that to get these things low enough means you either have to do some clever thinking / fabrication or just cross your fingers and pray to your god, and the fact that it's always been the perceived wisdom, possibly due to the aircooled VW's simplicity, that you HAVE to do the work to it yourself or you're not part of the scene... oh and a basic ignorance of what is and isn't roadworthy... it's got an MoT and therefore blah blah blah.

there are A LOT of buses being driven about that aren't roadworthy.

easy for me to preach perhaps with mine in bits in the garage, but i still have to share the road with them in my wife's daily or on the bus or whatever.

i like the idea that a rule is coming in / has come in (?) saying if you're in a fight, and you decide to stamp on somebody's head, then from now on that's attempted murder or whatever the correct legal terminology is, because to be honest what exactly are you doing stamping on somebody's head if you're not trying to kill them ?

surely with work like the above the same rules apply ?

unless those 'modifications' were done by a child or a monkey what possible outcome did the person responsible envisage ? another 100,000 miles of trouble-free motoring ?

sorry to preach but this stuff makes me cross... well done for speaking out :|

I usually just sit back and let people get on with it but thankfully earlybay is one of the few places you can have an indepth talk about various topics without the knives coming out.

i work on aircooled vws day in and day out and see a lot of dodgy repairs and mods, im always getting asked to "just patch it" or "just get it through the MOT" and i have to tell people if you want to drive a 30 year old vw then it is gonna cost over time, if you want a cheap motor go buy an escort or a micra... now most people think im an arse because of it but i far as i can tell if i dont have my principles i dont have a damn thing in the business world.
i often see people posting threads showing restos with piss poor welding or dangerous ideas, im happy to send them a PM just to point them in the right direction rather than post on a thread saying "blah blah your crap..." 99% of the time i get a thank you email
If we dont keep our VWs safe and well maintained then we will get legistrated off the road and i for one really dont want that.
