what is this

]ok can't sort my photo bucket tonight pain in the arse. I have what looks like a many pronged plug on the right side of the engine compartment which is wired into the loom. I suspect it has something to do with a trailer? I will keep trying the photo. Question what could it be and could I splice into it to get a 12v socket into the back of the van

Having googled the socket in the van it seems it is a diagnostic plug in. My next question would be what tool goes into the plug and what does it diagnose

In this month's (September issue) "Camper and Bus" mag Hans Klapp touches on this very subject. My bus had a lot of the wires going to the plug cut or damaged over the years by previous "careful owners". I have just removed the remains of most of them to tidy up the rear light and engine bay looms so if I break down or loose a light I can see if any currently used wires are out of place. Looks like it originally had feeds from ignition, charging and lighting circuits and it's own plus and minus feeds to give battery voltage. If yours is all there its worth keeping as long established dealer or specialist may have a lead to fit but these days a good multi-meter replaces most of what this did.

Finally did it. Now can I use this to run a 12v socket into the back of the van. If so. Can I test for continuity then earth the socket to the van and push the live into one of the holes in the socket

I don't believe there are any functional diagnostics machines left, so unless you concoct your own home-brew system it's up to you whether you leave it, cut it off etc. You could put a 12V socket there, but make sure you put a fuse in, and make sure the fuse is rated lower than the loom feed to your socket.

I think that will be the plan. Going to run electrics into the back of the van. All with inline fuzes.
