Although my engine runs in a fashion, I’m looking to replace it with something hopefully more reliable with a little more power for touring/cruising.

I was looking at something like remtec’s 1641 street power. Does anyone have one of these? What sort of cruising speeds/Mpg do you get?

Also, is there something better around for the money or do I really have to spend more money to see any real difference ????

Sorry for all the questions, but I’d really appreciate peoples opinions and experiences.

Cheers
Nigel

Remtec dont have the best of names at the moment concerning engines!
If you've got the sort of money remtec are asking then you'd be better spending it on your own engine.
The basic engine isn't going to get more you power, for this you need to get twin carbs, decent aftermarket exhaust, change the cam etc.

If it was me i would rebuild your own

Froggys right remtec are the best off the shelf engines, remtec used to be volkswagens recon plant in south africa.

Avoid the red, gold, green engines they have a bad rep.

Whats wrong with your current motor?

Thanks for the replies fellas. The engine runs but it just doesnt fill me with confidence.

I'd love to rebuild my engine but I just dont think Ive got the skills or confidence.

Bearing this in mind, What is my best option?

Depending on the exchange rate, i have heard good things about importing a turn key motor from the states, i have seen a few of these in feature cars in volksworld!

both sell remtec, about £900 sheets for a long block, new Brazilian motors with everything fitted carb, alternator, tin are about £2500.

I've just ordered a 1914 turnkey from Andy Hall (gresemonkeyracing) all in including shipping it works out at £3200 for a New Ali case tapped for full flow with fram filter and radiator, jaycee pushrods, Bergmann Porsche cooling fan kit (55 amp alt) painted in my chioce of colour, 044 heads ported and polished, fully balanced crank etc, straight cut gears, deep sump, rotary fuel pump, new svda dizzy with compufire ign, compufire coil and leads, CB performance hex linkage and filter set, im providing the webber IDF twin carbs and manifolds myself, and Andy is jetting and rebuilding, ceramic A1 sidewinder exhaust, i cant remember the full spec but he has the best reputation on the samba at the moment and is a really nice guy to talk to, really knows his stuff too. The price also included the gearbox conversion for a 1303s box into a bay.

This really is a good deal, I would be lucky to buy a longblock of the same spec in the UK for this price including shipping. he works from a london number too

That is a bargain!!! due you know what sort of duty you will have to pay on that?

1776 from Laurie Petit or Aircooled Performance.
You won't really notice the increase in performance in a 1641, you can run a 1776 on 34 icts so it won't be too thirsty. I think this would be the best compromise between performance, reliability and mpg.

Alternatively if you don't mind hacking your engine bay up you could go down the type four route?

I wouldn't be too sure about buying a turn key from the states, what would you be able to do if something was wrong with it?

How much would an engine like that cost in the UK? £6K? i could ship it back and forward a few times before it gets to that price

most US builders will allow you to have the engine fixed locally and pay the bill, to save on shipping back. If you chose the right builder you shouldnt have any problems, and if you do hopefully they would be small ones.

anyway 8 weeks to build and probably at least 2 to ship so i'll keep you informed.
