Hi people , i have just started taking my van to bits and it has dawned on me that my tools are poop !!

Here they are

So other than paying top dollar for Mac or Snap on what spanners / Socket sets are best value for money

What do you all use ???

Halfords have some good deals on their professional range at the moment & they have a lifetime replacement on them (if you keep the receipt).
A socket set, spanners (ratchet ones are well priced at the moment) & decent set of screwdrivers would be a good start.

i bought the halfrauds Pro range (i think it was 150 piece set) it was reduced from £199 to £99 and broke one of the philips head bits (my own stupidity) they did indeed replace it with another bit and no quibbling so the guarantee is good.

I've had my set for going on 2 years. Its a decent set of spanners as good as any of the draper stuff i have, i'm pretty pleased with them for the money.

I use alot of the same type of tools with work .. but as I have to suply them myself and have a habit of loosing them, I dont go for nothing too flash ..

.. And have also found the Halfords ones to be quite good .. which kind of surprised me a bit ..

The Machine mart ones are a bit cheaper .. but a bit poorer quality ..

.. the Magnesson range at B&Q seema bout the best quality for low(ish) cost ..

.. I would say though .. money spent on tools is a good investment .. the right 3 quid spanner can save you hours,Knuckle skin and shagged bus parts.. 8)

Hilly

Get yourself to the fleamarket and have a good rummage theres nothing like getting your hands on a king ****

Halfords pro stuff is good, but the replacement warranty does not apply to moving parts, so ratchet spanners and socket ratchets arent covered. I was suprised, but the sign they display in store is very clear. I did get it replaced  but the warranty they actually offer isnt all its cracked up to be.

Draper are pretty good too.

A decent set of spanners
A decent socket set
Allen keys
Large hammer
Chisel
Screwdriver set
Test / Multi meter
Somewhere to store them all (think the tin might be too small  )

The spanners and the socket set are what you'll use most so spend as much as you can on the right set, Dont personally think Snap on are worth the money but the Halfords range do appear good value.
Check ebay!

I too just treated myself to the Halfrauds pro set,ex quality and currently half price, bob on.... ;)

As Snap-on and Mac are out of the question try Kamasa and Sealey gear, thats what i began with when i started in the trade. We have a Sealey rep come round my workshop, i'll get you a catalog and bring it round if you want :D

Definitely Halfords. I've had pretty much the whole set replaced for free over the years, and you don't even need the receipt as all their tools say Halfords on them. 8)

You cant beat Halfords for quality and price, they are always on offer, all of my tools are Halfords even my tool chest.

I wouldent buy any thing else.

Depends what your buying really.

I've got a halfords professional socket set that I've used for yonks and it still going strong.
Britool make alot of nice stuff, I've got spanners of theirs that are good, got a couple of their ratchet screwdrivers that I've ****** up but they are cheap, and were replaced under their lifetime warrenty so can't complain. Also buggered a couple of ball end allen ratchet attachments but had them replaced.
Sealey hand tool are pretty shoddy, some of their stuff is alright but it tends to go wrong if you use it a lot.
Draper stuff is a quite hit and miss, some of it is total *****, the draper professional stuff is ok but nowhere near as good as the halfords pro or britool.
Blue Point (which is sold by snap on, but not made in the snap on factories but still carrys the same warrenty) is good and affordable, my blue point ratchet spanners were £120 which is about going rate, but they have flank drive so can undo rounded up mashed up bolt heads.
Snap On dealers sometimes carry second hand stuff which is worth finding out about (recently bagged myself £220 worth of torque wrench for £80 and still covered by the lifetime guarentee)
Mac Tools stuff seems to be a bit hit and miss from what I've seen, and occasionally massivly overpriced for no obvious reason.
Facom tools are again a bit hit and miss, for the price they are competing with britool and I'd have britool over them anyday.
Our supplier has just started doing Beta Tools which seem to be really well made and nicely priced.
Franklin make some good stuff for the price as well, they are definatly worth looking at for quality tools on a budget.

So erm thats about all I can think of as far as hand tools goes!
(Might have just exposed myself as a tool perve  )

Thanks for the advice dudes , Today i bought myself a 120 piece Halfords Professional set with my birthday money , Hopefully they will have their first days work next weekend :)

just wondering....should you be using the new tools, seeing as they are for professionals (as stated in title of tools) ;)
