We've just bought a 1970 Clipper and we'd like to know exactly what that meant.
It has evidence of being a bus at some point, it has a pop-top of some kind - don't know much more as its secured down at the moment waiting repair, it has a sun roof over the cab. We've removed a wooden panel from the flooring and found two round vents where the back seats would have been - but not seen these in any photos of bays anywhere else.

We're new to campers and are also a beetle owner so hardly new to the scene but most definately new to vans! loving it so far. but it's going to be hard work to get roland ready for the summer.

No such thing

The clipper was a short lived name for the later named deluxe, vw backed down after being threatened with legal action over the use of the name.

but what you've been sold by the sounds of it is a 70 microbus laterly converted will be clearer with pics

Hello and welcome. :D

Yep, pop some pics up and I'm sure we'll help identify the conversion that your bus would have originally been.

Hiya clip,

Yes, I'd agree with Araon.

It might help if, along with some pictures, you posted up the first three characters in your VIN.

sounds like the holes under the rear seat are the first point of entry for heat in the van. I welded mine up recently in order to fit the new interior. Mine was a micro bus originally. It also has vents under the walk through step and in the bulk heads behind the front seats.

Hi dude! Good to have aother member of the Partners in Chrome group posting - the deluxe wing of earlybay. Keep an eye out for a deluxe only opportunity late next summer...

Araons right

Pan Am threatened VW with legal action over the use of the name which had been used in a early brochure. VW backed down and used the name "Deluxe" instead. The brochure still excists and some people claim to have a Clipper but ive been into this quite awhile and done the rounds of shows/Hannover/Wolfsburg etc and ive never seen any real evidance of one.

The "M" codes always call the trim options for these buses as "Deluxe" and "Clipper".

Get the piccy up.

I've got the original instruction/service book for my 68 and there are reference's to "clipper" all the way through.

Franks not a clipper though

everyone else answered, there's a thread here which trys to summarise most of the differences between a deluxe/clipper and them run of the mill buses ;)

68 was the first model year for the bay and these are the ones that the advertising and brochures etc call the "clipper" but due to the Pan Am law suit they were never sold as such. The first year printed brochures and manuals etc remained. ;)

I could be wrong, im only quoting what ive read in VW history books and seen at the VW museum.

It has got clipper on the V5 document, the van has totally been stripped from orginal, we will get some pic's up shortly.

When we checked the Vin plate and m-plate numbers it says micro bus it was orginally made for uk market

Looks like a standard microbus that someone has added a poptop to, as others have said if you post what the m code says then you will know for sure but is certainly missing the external bits that would make it a Deluxe/Clipper (belt line trim, chrome window inserts etc)
