If you're talking standard then 1971 is the best year in my opinion. But I would prefer an early early with a disc conversion. Not that Drum brakes are a big problem though,I've done plenty of driving in my 1970 Dormobile without hitting anything yet!
To sum it up they're all good. But if I had my choice I would probably choose a 1967 built RHD
68. One-year only with lots of exclusive (read elusive.... :roll bits and bobs.
If not a 68 then a 71. All that lovely style such as moon vents, flat front arches and small rear lights but with the added advantage of discs at the front.
I gotta say my '71 has been the best year i've had (made in Nov 1970). It's got most of the early features that my dec '67 van had (which comes a close 2nd), apart from door handles, painted dash, cool rear view mirror and wide 5 wheels etc, but the discs are a big bonus, think this one's a keeper,as it's got the best of everything!
All the parts from earlies, with no specifically rare or difficult to obtain bits. And even better if given a late bay disc upgrade, cheap parts all round.
Complete with early looks, it is brilliant.
Mine even has the '68/69 only rear view mirror mount (new roof) which IMO is nicer than the later style push-on mirrors.
They're all great and everyone's going to say their particular buses year is the best (me included).
I love 68s (pre august 68 ) because of all the subtle little differences which make them quite rare. Not to fussed about disc brakes, drums work perfectly well.
68 (but then of course that's what I'd say) - the bay in it's purest form.
I guess you could also say that in VW terms, earliest is always the most desirable:
- kdfs - wartime beetles - pre 1950 beetles - 50-52 split window beetles - zwitters - pre 56 ovals - 56& 57 ovals etc.
- barndoors - wolfsburg made non-barndoor - ribbed bumper busses - small window buses etc.
And within each category, there'll always be one year differences that'll make the earlier one that little bit more sought after.
