Which gearbox for type4

Putting a type4 lump in my bay. Currently no engine In there but it did have a type 4 originally. Got a CA code 002 box but I don't think it's going to fit. It's going into a 79. I know it's not an early but I know you guys have more experience in engine mods than us.

What is the norm? 6rib is a bit expensive but this bus is a keeper so if It is the only choice then that's just the way it is.

Any help welcome. I am officially stuck.

The answer to this depends on what T4 engine your going to fit. There were three available 1700, 1800, and 2000cc. The gearing for each engine was different.

Stock 1600 box on the 1700. 5 rib on the 1800 and 6 rib on the two litre.

i checked the codes on the heads and it corresponds to 1700cc, but i have someone telling me that its wrong over on TLB. i am confused a bit.
 
If your engine has unknown history its hard to tell.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say they tell you its wrong. What's wrong?

The engine number should give a clue, though admittedly its possible that, as happens with type1 engines, the engine has been rebuilt using other components.

Testing on a dyno could also give a clue and allow you to judge the best gearing - but ultimately, the only way to be sure of its capacity, is to dismantle and measure bore and stroke.

Was asked to take a measurement of how much of the shaft was protruding past the edge of the bellhousing. I had 15mm.

The engine is an AN code with 1700 heads
 
Well an AN code engine should be 1800cc and was used in the Type4 and in the Porsche 914 in the mid 70's I think.

I am not sure how it could be fitted with cylinder heads from a 1700.

Any of the three T4 gearboxes will physically fit though the one for the 1700 will likely be under geared. The five rib box is what would have originally been used on an 1800cc T2 and the six rib box would give you longer gears, nice for cruising but maybe a bit less so if fully laden in the mountains.

The only thing that changes the gearing of these gearboxes is the ring and pinion gear.

If you have a good gearbox already then a gearbox specialist can swap the ring and pinion gear. They are interchangeable from one box to another.
