Why does it take ages for a PM message to leave Outbox?

Just wondered if it's something I need to acknowledge or if it needs vetting? Not sure?

I think it sits in your outbox until the recipient reads it - then it shifts to sent

Exactly this. If it gets read immediately, it moves immediately. If it never gets read, it'll never move.
