This is what the DVLA list that reg as so something is a little dodgy

The enquiry is complete
The vehicle details for UDV 179H are:

Date of Liability..................01 05 2010
Date of First Registration....01 05 2009
Year of Manufacture...........1970
Cylinder Capacity (cc).........1998CC
CO2 Emissions...................Not Available
Fuel Type ..........................Petrol
Export Marker....................Not Applicable
Vehicle Status....................Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour...................BLUE
Vehicle Type Approval.......null

Its certainly not Blue yet was only registered in May this year and has it got a 2 lite lump in it, sounds very dodgy to me and I would be taking it back to the dealer who has clearly passed it off as something its not,

To be honest, the only real way of finding out is to get a birth cirtificate from VW, my guess is that the birth cirtificate will say it was made in 73/4 but when it was imported the DVLA messed up.

or quite simply decipher the chassis number, if it says its a 73/74 but still ties up with the reg doccument its ok, just a cock up with the DVLA.

On the ther hand if the chasis number does say its a 70 model, then its time to worry.

the late bay fuel filler neck is the giveaway!...unless its had a replacement side panel which i doubt

Im with you on that dood ;)

Also where is the removeable rear valance????? not there! it should be on a 70 and that would be serious work to put that in and this badboy hasnt got it. You wouldnt change to a non removeable for any reason as it would make things so much more of a pain.

Unless this is a total pre production bay then its dodgy as ****! call the cops, call the DVLA, call the Bay police! and send it to the late bay forum! ;)

Not being funny but the DVLA are very careful with imports and you have to show proof of age, the fact it was used in another country and the docs from that country etc etc and they check the paperwork twice (I know as I've done this twice recently) and I find it hard to believe they would make a mistake especially when its going to be classed as 'Historic' for tax purposes.

As this has only been first registered in the last couple of months I suspect something funny has gone on here, especially as the colour does not even match, you have to manually fill in the colour of the vehicle on the V55/5 and thats what appears on the logbook!

Graham, I know what you are saying, but if the chassis number matches the reg doccument and the chassis number does state that its a 73/4 then it can only be a cock up at the DVLA!

but if as you say that are strict then it must be a case of a dodgy chassis number, are they rivited on or are they stamped too?

Chassis number should be stamped on the RH side of the engine bay close to where the engine seal sits and by the bracing bracket that comes off the rear wheelarch (well it is on an Early Bay   )

on a late van like this it should be stamped into the LH side of the engine bay as you open the lid its facing you.
just had a thought tho, maybe its been reshelled???

again...thanks for all the great comments about this so far.... really has got your debating skills going!!!!

as for the orig colour... the owners have posted a picture of the engine/engine bay....and its....ORANGE!!!
also it has a type 4 engine in it... which they were told was a porsche engine....

all a bit weird really!

I saw the funny side to this thread at first but it has been going around in my head since.

It is not a 1970, it will never be one, anyone who knows VW's knows this is not a 1970. More importantly the dealer selling knows it isn't a 1970. It has managed to get 1970 status through poor paperwork, and loopholes in the law.

The biggest issue here is what pretext did the new owners buy this under? If they think they have a 1970 bus with a porsche engine, they have been miss sold a product. They now own a bus that will be difficult to sell and may possibly cost them via Tax issues in the future. It should not be tax exempt due to it's REAL manfacture date.

I really feel for the new owners and if I were them I would be taking a visit to the dealer asking for my money back or looking at a realistic price for the vehicle.

yeah I do agree with you there, if this was sold by a dealer as a 70 with a Porsche engine then he should be named and shamed!

come on who was it ???

...I must add that i do NOT condone this but heyho good for the owner who doesn`t have to pay tax....ssssssshhhhhhhh everyone. The more people that report this the more likely that we will all lose our tax exempt status on our genuine vehicles.

You couldn't be more wrong - genuine historic vehicle owners can only benefit from reporting this sort of thing.

Thats the clincher - DVLA inspectors arent VW experts and will inspect a chassis number where they are shown it ... the whole system of importation is full of loopholes.
A mate of mine has recently bought a US import lowlight Ghia with no docs. When he takes it to the DVLA if he states its from Europe (its lhd) then why would they assume its US? I think the taxes have been paid in the past, but misplaced - but its easy to fool the system.

The problem is really for the now owners of this van when they want to sell it on. Its worse than a Q plate! They'd be best to return it to the trader for a refund and start again, or get some compo and then re-register it and start shelling out on the tax.
