Lack of heat to the feet !

Thanks Guys, only fitted the fan shroud to give better access to the carbs- my old one had corroded through in the bottom corner so was u/s. -It will have to stay on until the next time I pull the engine. In the meantime I will see if there is any provision to fit a thermostat.

Lack of heat to the feet !

Well I have done all the obvious things, new heat exchangers (Genuine), new heater cables fitted and adjusted, lagged all visible pipework and blocked rear vents / set centre one to shut (actually found cable under seat worked after liberal spraying with wd40 !) but still only getting a very...

    Tappets, Timing, Points....what order?

Tappets first - engine must be stone cold, then do points (pref with a dwell meter) then timing. I would drive the bus between each adjustment just to check if there is any improvement/ decline in performance - if you do all three and get a problem it's harder to work out what went wrong !

    Another steering box issue

The box should be filled with EP 90 gear oil. I used the Morris one that I got from JK to refill my gearbox. It's easiest with one of the litre bottles with a flexible tube thingy, fill it up until it drips out of the filer hole (and all up your arm!)

    Gearbox Help needed

I have just renewed my Empi quick shift plate to stop the embarrassing "1st to reverse instead of 2nd" crunch on my bus. Just doing this cured my problem, so I would say it's probably down to adjusting the position of the plate -I found pulling it over to the left hand side whilst tightening the...

    Help !!!!!!!

Back firing is caused by the spark being generated at the wrong time - so well worth checking the dizzy over and resetting the points gap, then the timing with a strobe light - rev the engine up with the light attached and you should see if the advance is working properly. If you still have the...

    Throttle cable outer

I modified a Beetle outer cable as couldn't find anywhere that stocked the van one. The Beetle one is too long -it is best cut with a Dremmel cutting wheel or similar to get a smooth edge on the re-enforcing wire - then I found a bit of fuel pie that slipped over the outer and the tube that goes...

    Engine bay, sound proof roof

I recently put the Rackhams kit in mine, over some flame retardant foil backed foam. Nice bit of kit and only needed to trim a tiny bit to clear the diagnostics plug bracket - good communications too if you contact them through this site :D

    Engine bar bolts

All three bolt holes in the "moustache bar" should be used - this it what is holding the weight of the engine and to a certain extent preventing it twisting under load. It looks like your case has the bump in the casting for the third hole -so you might just need to drill and tap it. Be careful...

    Moustache bar bolt holes???

Early bays need what's known as the "universal" case - ie one with the three bolt holes. If your "new" case is missing a hole it most likely came out a beetle originally. You can get an adapter plate to bolt on to the oil pump ( heritage / machine 7 etc) to allow the case to be used - but you...

What's this wire for on the coil

That looks like it might be a suppressor - used to reduce interference to radios etc. If its not connected to anything just remove it - if you get interference to your sound system that varies with engine speed it might be worth connecting it up again.

    help changing fuel filter

You should know by now there is no such thing as a "5 minute job" on an early bay ! If there is one it only leads to uncovering something else you want to upgrade/repair etc. I took the firewall off mine while I have the engine out - just to check the breather and filler hoses. I found...

    cab doors

You may need to drill new holes for the inner door release handle too - so don't chuck your old door away before you are sure everything fits!

    Fitting new rubbers grrrrrrr

Do you know where the "late" door came from ? I fitted new doors to my van from Justkampers, the ones without the swage line so not Brazilian. These still had the place for the felt channel, it is held at the top by a spring clip that slots into a hole below the bottom of the window channel in...

    What's this pipe?

That's the drainage pipe for the fresh air grill on the front of the van. Should let the water out underneath the front valance. You need to recoonect this or replace it otherwise you will get wet feet next time it rains - unless some previous owner/ vandal has "smoothed over " the grill.
