    Sliding Door Lock - Advice

Use a hair bobble around the lever? Small elastic cloth-covered band, available in loads of colours, and provides enough friction to stop the lever dropping into "lock you out" position.

    Head stud question

Hello all, Just wondering if anyone has any experience of using the later 8mm head studs on an SP engine. I've seen upgrade kits to fit TP heads to SP case, but those seem to be heads only, which I guess means the 10mm and 8mm studs are interchangeable between heads. I read about the problem...

Single-port manifold - leaking heat pipe - repair or scrap?

I didn't get around to fitting a servo over the winter and events have overtaken the project this year. I was looking at fitting a servo from a late bay, together with master cylinder and brake-pedal push-rod from a late bay, and eventually front disc setup of some sort. But that's complicated...

    Smiths digital tachometer

That percentage difference can't be explained away by a 4/6/8 cylinder selection switch. How old is the VDO tacho? The new Smiths one is digital, so it counts ignition pulses and uses that number to drive the needle to a predetermined position. If the VDO is analog, then the ignition pulses...

Single-port manifold - leaking heat pipe - repair or scrap?

Just wondering if there's any interest in this. It's off a June 1970 bus, stock single-port Solex manifold with no vacuum take-off. Until I replaced it recently, I was running with a blanking plate in each of the heat riser flanges because the pre-heat pipe is rusted through in the sections...

Is it normal for a faulty oil pressure switch to leak?

OK, so I've changed the oil pressure switch and copper crush washer and that at least is no longer leaking. However, the tinware is wet (fresh oily) below the distributor and fuel pump on the left of the engine, and below the crank pulley (where there might be a leak or it might be collecting by...

Is it normal for a faulty oil pressure switch to leak?

My bus used to use a lot of oil. It would get from dipstick max to min in a hundred miles, which is a staggeringly bad 50 miles per pint I think. It used to be obvious; you could see it running down the case from under the fan shroud and there was an oily film over the back of the bus. It...

Or if you need it quick and don't care what it looks like, JB weld a coin over it ? (only half joking)

    Mechanical fuel pump vs Electric?

I guess you could do something similar with a relay operated by the generator charge light with a "cranking" override to get it started. But on my bus both the charge light and oil pressure light come on when stopping at traffic lights after a long run. Probably not long enough for the carb to...

    Mechanical fuel pump vs Electric?

There's nothing wrong with mechanical pump on a stock bus. OK, it takes a few seconds longer to start if the bus has stood a long time and the fuel evaporated or leaked out of the carburettor float bowl, but has benefits, to my view. If it has stood long enough to need a good crank, it will...

    Headlights

Pretty sure I used regular 60/55w H4. You do need to drill some holes in the Golf headlight tabs to match the bus headlamp bowl. Not a big job. Should be a good swap. Mine had no headlights when I got it so I can't compare.

    Stereo knackered

All the above, plus: Is it possible the garage fitted the leisure battery the wrong way around? That could be effectively minus 12V on the leisure supply, which a lot of devices will not like. Your split charge relay might be sulking too. Less likely is that it is somehow wired minus to plus...

    Tachometer connection

Those tachos are really good 8) I *did* use a screened cable; the same kind of stuff intended for an electric guitar, so I can't comment on performance with un-screened cable. As you say, there is very little current flowing, which means you could use as thin a cable as you like; it only...

    Pre-purchase inspection

I would want to see the underside to look at how it was lowered and the quality of any welding and whether it needs more. For example; blobby welds, rust holes and patches on patches means walk away at that price. RAC used to offer inspection service to members and maybe still do. Kwik-fit I...

    Guess-what-speed-o cable fixed thankyou EB

I think we'll call it a success. Speedo works now *and* I didn't lose any dash lights or gauges, which I thought I might have disturbed by doing the job with the instrument panel in-situ.

The guys at Bullibarn near Colchester defintiely know their stuff. Not sure if they would help with an inspection. https://www.vwbullibarn.co.uk (no affiliation, just a satisfied customer)

    Guess-what-speed-o cable fixed thankyou EB

My bus speedo has been erratic since I got it. The needle flicked at low speed and sometimes stopped altogether for a few minutes. It was live-able until a couple of weeks ago it stopped working and didn't recover, so after a quick search on EB, I checked that the cable end was still poking...
