Looking at future upgrades and I think a 1776 may well be in order but a few questions first:
 Is this based on the 1700 :?:
 Is it a straightforward swap in a EB :?:
 What kind of cost am I looking at :?:
 Do I need to change the gearbox :?:
 Is it easy enough to build one myself :?:
 Is there an alternative to the 1776 :?:

To give you a level of my experience I converted a hillclimb/sprint caterham from a 1700 xflow to a Honda Blackbird engineed beast and did most of the mods myself so am reasonable at spannering but don't really know my way round an aircooled engine (yet  )

(sat typing this whilst bored waiting at Paris CDG for a flight home after a bl**dy long week away working)

...........but heading off in Hank on Sunday to the Gower with the family for a week

* No. The 1700 is a type4 style engine - you know that 'Porsche' engine :? A 1776 is a
standard type1 1600 (1584) with bigger bores (90.5mm vs 85.5mm).
* Yes straight swap - but if you build it yourself youmust have the crankcase and heads machined to accomodate the bigger barrels (a common job).
* DIY approx 1000 GBP bought in approx 2000
* Not unless you want ..
* Yes - get Tom Wilson's book - how to rebuild your VW engine.
* Many alternatives with varying bores and strokes. In the latter case you will need an aftermarket crank as well. Also you can fit a late bay 'type 4' unit but this require mods to the engine bay - or so I'm told

Check out Vzi (volkszone.com) mechanical section and search on 1776.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply, time to do a bit of reading and some research,

A good place to get all the bits n pieces is here

http://www.johnmaherracing.co.uk/

Can find / get most bits at a reasonable price too.

Dont forget that carbs will make a big difference and is one to consider for cost and fuel consumption etc. 8)

WHS very good site and prices are extremely good..... dont blow your budget on shiney trash set aside a decent budget for heads they will make a hell of a difference.....

remember kids - chrme doesnt get you home. Go for good quality parts and spend that extra few pennies where it counts. 8)

Graham, I fitted my 1776 over the course of a few evenings, even lifted the bloody thing in by myself. It's not so bad once you know the basics.
As easy said though, go for quality where possible, not shiney *****, and VW/stock parts (ie top pulley, tinware, rocker covers etc) whenever you can.

It's coming out again over the winter for a change of cam and bigger crank.

So if you need any help/advice, give me a bell, might be able to help.

Good luck,
Ollie
