So using an olympics analogy, 'I have picked up the baton' from a great bloke who has done a great job so far on this 1970 Westy.
His small build thread is here: http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=31059

The kids named her Lucy :)

This is what she looked like when Vinco bought her, (more on his smallbuild):

Spoke to Rackhams about a wood headlining as the headlining in the bus was flaking and the front part missing. Sent by courier, well packaged and arrived in perfect condition.

How hard can it be. Just pops in...

So, the strength of the new headlining broke the rivets holding the metal J profile strip on to the bus

J profile strip riveted back on. :)

Spray glued the insulation to the roof (no old insulation to get rid of, which apparantly is really itchy stuff)

Metal backing plate for the Dome light got rivited on.

Headlining does 'pop in' but it feels as though it going to break, goes in with a bang, thought we'd broken it.

I profile strips in and happy days. :D

Think I will varnish/stain it to match the new continental bed I got from Jon http://forum.earlybay.com/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=718 Highly recommended, looks great. Looking forward to getting that in.

Congrats on the new to you bus!! :D

I redid my headliner too and I know what you mean about going in with a bang! LOL I ended up having to put mine in and take it back down a few times to get it just right in the front. I was doing it by myself so I didn't have anyone to help me guide it in the right spot, I got it in though and that is all that counts!

I look forward to following your thread! :D

I see its had a ladies touch, a little Cath Kidston inside. that's what my interior would look like if our lass could get her hands on it
Great looking bus though with loads of potential, good times. :D

Thanks for the congrats!

The conversation went a bit like this "Why don't we get this bus it's got Cath Kidston cushions"
Yeah, my wife liked the interior, when I bought it I said to Vinco, all the hard work you've done and your wifes cushions sold it!

Definitely going to be a family bus, my 5yr old and 8yr old, want red seats so might be a bright bus when it's finished :)

Lookin good Dave - thought I'd better check your thread out - even though I drive past your bus everyday!

Had loads of stuff done since my last post.

The main problems were the bus was cutting out at junctions, I had to keep the revs pretty high when it came to a stop to keep the engine running.
It was making a real racket, the engine was so noisy you couldn't hear each other talk inside when I was driving!
No heat in the bus from the heat exchangers.
The window channel had rusted and broke which meant the window couldn't stay shut, which meant an even colder trip home from The New Forest!
The door locks at the front weren't working and the sliding door wasn't sliding smoothly.

So...

I took it down to Pete from Air Cooled Technic. He repaired the door locks, re aligned the doors, rewired the horn and set the valves, cleaned the plugs and points, and fixed the passenger window.
There were beetle heat exchangers on which would have worked, but I thought sod it I'll get bus ones, so those were fitted.
The CSP disc brakes went on and the drag link, which helped the driving of it loads. Replaced the CV boots for the M.O.T.
And the wiring to the horn was fixed.

Got a bit of welding done, the acid from the battery had eaten the tray and had gone through to the rear quarter. And it needed a new front and inner valance. Apart from that all solid. :)

Driving the bus home through the middle of Guildford and it totally cut out, no ignition or anything.  Luckily it was just the battery cables were loose and I was on my way again with a police escort to the next roundabout (very nice policeman).

Went out for a test drive and it started to cut out again
and it was getting worse.

So back to the garage for some diagnosis.

Thought I'd try a garage closer to home this time, so I could get another type of bus home, a big red one.
Harding Autos in Knaphill was recommended by a friend (they have a classic car rate and a bloke called Len that had a bus for years.

Three days it took to work out the problem, or problems...

The automatic choke wasn't working, the fuel cut-off valve wasn't working and the accelerator pump wasn't working. Also cylinder #3 was at 90psi where the others were at 120psi.

Turns out the main problem was the fuel pressure. There was inadequate lift on the fuel pump because the push rod wasn't fitted correctly which caused the pump damage. Refitted push rod and pump, and a thicker base gasket material corrected the lift and the fuel pressure was then ok.

So Len got me a second hand carb and a pancake air filter. Will change to an oil bath one when I can find one. Fitted a new in-line fuel filter, new Ignition coil and new Ignition leads and plugs.

Lastly a piece of garden hose is my new oil breather pipe.

Now it drives lovely. :D

Got the continental bed from Faux sitting in the lounge and had to get it in the bus.

First fitted the bar that keeps the headrest up.

Followed the instructions and up it went... apart from one mistake, I shouldn't have measured the hole in the bracket for the drill bit, I should have measured the self tapping screw. Luckily I only drilled one hole which was way too big for the screw. So I need to get a bigger screw for one of the holes.

The beds are beautifully made and IMO looks great...

Cleaned up the dash with a cockpit plastic cleaner, under all that grime it's in great condition.
Here it is half done...

When I shut the door the other week the glass fell out. And the other one was in bad condition, so I replaced both the wing mirrors...

Last week I went up to Bus & Camper in Cambridge and picked up my westy icebox unit.

Someone put in an extra hole in the top cupboard :( But otherwise pretty good condition. Need to find the rest of the parts now, waste pipe, water container, vent pipe, filler tube, cap!

Anyone recognise what age bus this tap is from? I think it's from an earlier bus than mine.

The one I need is silver, like this.

After what seemed like ages, my bus is in for paint, can't wait to see the work in progress :D
It had to be done, for her own good. If I'd have left it she would have rusted away.

I got the window seals from Custom & Commercial, German quality ones so hopefully should fit well :)
2013-01-08210051_zps3a7de83f.jpg

The Westfalia seals all laid out. Next job is to take the window apart. Apparantly a bitch of a job. I'll upload some pics when I've finished.

Here's where the bodyshop is at the moment.

All stripped down :)

IMG_0662_zps11e0b310.jpg

A couple of things broke when they were taken off.

Got a new number plate light, new screen washer jets, an engine lid hinge and gasket, and the plastic Mount/pivot for the end of the air vent flap, from Heritage.

No wonder there was freezing cold wind coming through no matter what I did with the levers.

New aerial from Just Kampers
x2 Rear lens from Machine 7
New grille from FBI

Bottomless pit seems to come to mind

While I was waiting for the jalousie windows to get taken out, I started to clean my oil bath filter. Used my motorcycle degreaser 'Muc off', worked a treat.

Top had gone rusty so I've started to wet and dry back to bare metal, ready for paint.

Checked the thermostat by heating it up, all worked ok :D

Get's addictive searching for original parts.

My bus is next to be done so should start seeing some proper progress soon :)

I'm going over on Saturday to get the jalousie windows, then start cleaning and replacing seals

That's the job I'm on with at the moment, tis a borin job!!
But they're starting to clean up now!!

Do you know how much weight the continental bed can carry? :)

Two kids would be fine up there, definitely not strong enough for two adults.
I never asked about one adult sleeping up there as I got it for my two kids, but I got up there to fit it and it seemed like it wasn't going anywhere :)

I got it made and posted from faux
