Hi All,

Only my second post on here and Im still fairly new to things so please bear with me as I'm looking for some advice.

I refurbed the Solex (Bocar) 30-PICT-1 carb on my 1600 70 bay a couple of weeks ago (new float, gaskets, cleaning and jets) and after running it for approx 50 miles all seemed to be well, however this weekend after an overnight stop on a campsite it started leaking out of either end of the carb throttle spindle. This resulted in the engine starting but not being able to idle and spluttering to a stop, not sure why this started after we had parked up for the night but it was a hot day on sunday.

After a trip on the back of an AA van to get home I have taken the carb apart using the info in the tech how to article from NickJ (nice sticky BTW) and it doesn't have the bushes as in the article (im guessing this is a feature of later model carbs), however there is lots of play between the shaft and the casting and it certainly don't feel tight so I can see where fuel is escaping and air entering the carb.

So since it's not designed for replacement bushes, im guessing the options available to me are either get it machined out to fit some bushes (seen some posts that refer to this) or get another carb.

Reading up on carbs and it seems that the general view is new carbs aren't worth buying due to them being inferior quality. Now I don't do lots of miles in the bus as its not a daily driver (i am fortune enough to get a company car) so are comments about new carbs really aimed at people doing lots of miles or are they just best avoided altogether ?, until this recent incident I'd not had reason to complain about the bocar and have done approx 1000 miles with it over the last 18 months but don't know.

So after all the rambling the question is really is it worth the effort/cost of getting the bocar machined and does anyone know anyone that can do this in the east midlands ? or is the cost of doing that better spent of getting a reconditioned OG carb and anyone have/know where I can a single carb that will be suitable for a relative newbe that wants to get involved and learn more ?

Hope someone can help with some advice, but thanks in advance

Andy

ok pal its a bit like marmite love em :D hate em  some do some dont .i had the same problem, i even got it re bushed, and it ran fine for about 500 mile, then one morning as i set of for work it started acting the goat :( i got a replacement carb from ebay  ..yes i know ..it was a duffer and it was off some one with an earlybay  but they were not from here :) so i bought a brand new one from german/swedish..ok for about 100 miles and that went pear shaped, took it back to g/s and they exchanged it straight away, that one seems fine 950 miles later, and its still purring .so with hindsight i would get a new one, and you know if it goes a bit pete tong ,you can get it exchanged no hassle and save yourself 50 quid on a load of ebay claptrap ..scrap being sold by some of the so called vw enthusiasts . sorry about the rant.. i dont want you to waste youre money on a carb thats knackerd, and a good servicable one is hard to find,.. as ive got abought 6 of em and there all knackerd.....

 soory pal i forgot to mention the gsf carb isnt set up you have to set it yourself but they are the same as youre p.i.c.t carb to set up hope this helps..

I use Brosol (NOT Bocar aka crap) H30/31 carbs to replace the 30 PICT series carbs. They are really good quality and last for at least ten years. Jet them as advised here using jets from your old carb. http://www.vw-resource.com/carb.html#brosol.

You can pick up good s/h H30/31 carbs for about £30.

I can find you a good one if you want to try it.
