Alpine iLX-FD90D Headunit - new release.

What’s everyone think of the new Alpine iLX-FD90D? It’d look pretty good in some vans who have a modern twist. The only issue for me, is possible theft as it’s a big unit and the screen is a bit ‘in your face’.

Screen is massive, looks bigger than the daft small steering wheel too

Does the angle change so the driver can actually see what the screen has on it?

Oh no, I agree mate - it’s not going to suit all vans.

The screen angles all ways, and slide up and down too. It’s like the new Merc ones have I guess.

I just thought with for long journeys and connectivity it’s great. But, the screen could do with being retractable or clip off.

Maybe betterer as an overhead unit to come down by the mirror. I used to run a shelf above screen height for my amps and graphic equaliser and various head units back in the dark ages. Nicely out of the way too and mostly out of sight . I’d want it to be able to
‘’’screen up’’’ so it wasn’t on display when parked.

However, I would hide the main unit somewhere such as under the seat, then extend the wiring so I could flush-mount the screen anywhere, potentially on an extendable arm from under the dash. opcorn:

Into existing headunit. Usually taps into speaker feeds like a normal Bluetooth kit does.

I'm going to have a look at one at the weekend.
is it has its own arial id imagine it'll run straight off my amp as battery powered.
phone jack in feed amp away, or to an outlet on a headunit.... ill let you know Stu. 8)

Is it actually doing anything a smart phone doesnt already do though?

I have an old, but decent enough, Sony CD head unit in my glove box. My (i)phone is connected to it by an aux lead, this can then sit in a cup holder on the dash. I get sat nav, hands free, music via the head unit as an amp and it can all be voice activated (subject to Siri/ambient noise/data connection).

That unit seems a lot of liability to have in a relatively insecure old van?

As for fitting it a more modern car, my brother runs new VW's (Polo's, Golfs etc) and these units are pretty much standard factory fit these days. Maybe I've misunderstood it?

No, you're pretty much spot on.

It is just a boosted digital radio aerial which will also connect to your phone to play music from it and take calls. Both the digital radio and phone content can then be transmitted by FM frequency to an existing 'old' radio or using an Aux cable to a newer headunit.

I can imagine if you really want to keep your bus totally stock, which includes the radio, this would be useful, but as most people have upgraded headunits you can do all of this already apart from digital radio, which is not that fantastic in the UK yet anyway as it keeps dropping out depending on location.

Just take the speaker output from the Digital Radio, and wire up soldering into phono leads straight into the amp. No issues at all - great idea mate.
