ok so i have finay got the stance of my van exactly how I want it, I get no tyre rub at all and it drives lovely, problem is my beam now hits the floor, not good when you have a wife and two kids on board! so the question is how do you guys drive your vans so low without problems?

or do you just keep smacking your beam?

p.s excuse the flat paint, i will polish it soon, honest......

When I had my bug fairly low, a combination of pothole dodging (you spend more time looking at the quality of the upcoming road surface than the vehicles around you) and slow driving generally saw me not hitting the ground too much. Take things like speedbumps very slowly.

Or, alternatively, you could raise it ;)

I'm not a stock height buffer by any means, but my bug is going stock height for a while  - just to see how it drives as I've not driven a stock height one yet...

shave the beam seam a touch .... to be honest if I were to be runing that low i'd be fitting a grounding plate better replace regularly a cheap piece of plate than an expensive beam..... ;) you dont say what part of the beam is hitting?

just thinking the steering box is damned close to the ground too especially as your driving a forward control vehicle....

I presume it's the bottom of the beam end plates that's hitting the ground?
I had the same problem, properly **** myself when it first did it... Got the angle grinder out with a cutting disc, took about 1-1.5" off
If you know someone with a plasma cutter, that would prob be safer!!

Don't worry about it :D Mine hits the ground quite a bit but mainly when your not paying attention. On mine it's not the end plates (4" narrow link pin) it's the the steering pin & the other thing is the drop link & trackrod end which have a few grind marks  but then mine is a bit lower than yours is  Bumper scrapes a fair amount too!

I'm just a bit pissed off that i have finaly got the stance i was after and it now hits the floor! Tonight my job is to raise it up 10mm and stiffen the shocks that should hopefuly resolve it.

Watch this space.

I can't understand how this is hitting the floor, my bus seems pretty low, yet the tyres will hit the inner arch before the beam would bottom out. I will do some measurements.....maybe I need to go lower

Looks Cool by the way 8)

the tyre profile will effect this lot. the same height van, one will scrape wheel tubs and clear ground, the other will clear tubs and scrape ground. i can see that axl is running quite low profile tyres, so plenty of space over the tyre and not much below, capisce? i bet yours (faux) are a higher profile ;).

personally myself aim is to get it as low as practicable with a big as profile tyre on as you can. only reason to go ultra low profile is if you go a bigger wheel;16, 17 etc. i hate seeing vans slammed with ultra low profile tyres on 14s, they just look stupid. narrow the beam, tub the arches and get some proper rubber on 'em.

one thing that caught my eye was those dampers that had a pneumatic cylinder in them. you could fill 'em up with compressed air and get an extra tens if millimeters height. they aimed for vehicles when towing to lift up the back abit, or when carrying a heavy load. food for thought?

Yep, I'm running 175.55.15's where a lot of people run 165.50.15's.

The air shocks route is something I may look into for the future but am really happy with the ride on mine, no real ground clearance issues and a comfy ride.

the only bay i have driven that low and still had a good ride was fitted with air bags ,stiffen the shocks to much and you will need a ciropractor!

most crap rides i.m.o are caused by too stiff dampers or ball joints bottoming out. i have a major cut'n'twist job coupled with dropped spindles and modified trailing arms to get travel back from ball joints. all this supported by beetle cofaps. ride is comparable to stock very comfy. my test is put your foot on the front bumper and push down to bounce the vehicle. should be plenty of movement.

if you aint rubbin you aint dubbin mate. it always sounds worse than it is. it would take ages to wear through a beam. ive got some 165 45 15's for the front of mine :? i better get saving for a spare beam as mine aint guna last long

I'm running 175/50/15's a compramise I think lol

The van drives lovely, due to the dropped spindles and red9 design combo, this gives maximum drop, but keeps the trailing arms level so no bottoming out of the ball joints.

tonight I stiffened up the dampers and raised it 10mm, i'll take it out for a drive tomorrow to see how I get on, fingers crossed for decent clearence without tomuch change in stance :)

Your van should have loads of ground clearance at that height? :?:

Don't raise it, get an angle ginder on the bottom of the beam, easy :8
