Gave the van's engine bay a bit of a clean last night and noticed some (what appeared to be) black soot spots, dry all over the engine bay. Had a blast out today and noticed the same this evening. Is this anything to worry about? Cheers

When was the fanbelt last changed?

Could it be disintegrating throwing black rubber particles about? I'd imagine that could look similar to soot :)

Definitely not rubber bits, wiped off quite cleanly with a cloth - I be stumped! Cheers

Hi,

Possibly leaking exhaust manifold joints? My first thought was also fan belt, I get this on mine (it's a new one and not overtightened) - it's like soot in as much as it's not oily - so those would be my two guesses!

I don`t think he means chunks of rubber, but more like a rubber dust or black talcum powder, a quick look at the belt for a comparison should give you an idea.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,, I got it too but mines damp

I get a fine black dust over my engine bay at times. Not quite sure what it is. As you say its not oily. ..or in fact rubbery. Wipes clean with a cloth.
Had no issues with engine so far (fingers crossed)
So possibly not to worry too much mate.
