WOW is it me or are prices on earlies starting to go up?

spotted 8k for a import, no lights, rust and no engine,

good westys getting 21K, that's splitty territory isn't it.

is this just people trying to push the market up or are these realistic prices now, i get it if its someone's pride and joy fully restored and loaded with goodies etc. but a project at 8K wow

rant over what's your thoughts

Also remember that what something is advertised for compared to what it sells for are two very different numbers :msn4:
 
From talking to a few people recently it seems that prices are increasing. Not going to complain as it makes the van seem like a good investment now and lets me justify spending more money on it :lol:

True but I would imagine that as average asking price increases average sale price follows quite closely
 
They aren't making any more of these buses
I think EarlyBays are more exclusive than Splitties and loads more practical - I dont really fit in a Splitty too well

The buses that are about aren't getting any newer
Paid for restorations including paint-jobs can be £10k - £20k+
New engines are £2k - £9k

Never mind OG interiors, period parts that brake and loses through fire/accident/rust thinning the herd

Immaculate Westfalia (the best conversion) models costing more than £21k is no surprise to me and they will be insured north of £30k for replacement purposes
Personally I cant see the prices doing anything other than rise in the future - just have a look at the price change of Aircooled Porsches in recent years :shock:
Our bus isn't an investment however it is nice to own a vehicle that doesn't shed 10's of thousands over a couple of years like my modern cars have and will continue to do
Although it will probably cost me that much to maintain and use! :D

Minor spots of cosmetic rust !
as long as this goes on the prices will go up

The restorers are pushing the prices up. I looked closely at current prices when I got mine evaluated by a private motor assessor. To replace a perfectly restored Westy will cost over 25K, that is from imported project to finished van.
 
I've been 'shopping' recently for my brother, after an early pop top westy , I've been surprised on two fronts , first the general lack of buses available and then the price of those for sale. Projects have been £8-10k and there not much 'complete' under £15k. £18-19k seems to be the common ground. Plenty seen to be getting sold at that money too.

It is what it is. :)

Well said that man, I too don't fit in a splitty and have just restored mine at a cost of, well lets just say if the wife finds out I am dead.

But I did it for myself to have a toy that I can use with the wife and kids and don't plan on selling her.

But I dare say, as you say, the spending hasn't stopped.

At the moment they are a must have "Accessory" but will the increase in prices and parts prices and running cost one day kill it ?
The increase in prices is fuelling the Thefts of buses and invite so called specialists to pop like PPI companies charging over inflated prices for secondhand parts etc to rip us off
I don't get this one particular model commands a better price than another because of some cosmetic changes
Air cooled Bays Built in Germany 67-79 are the same its all nonsense
Having owns bays for the last 30 years I have watched them be divided into a whatever makes the most money group
If I sold mine now I would actually lose money
Anyway
sell up now before it's too late because the T5 craze is upon us now trying to emulate The Classic air cooled "Scene" and devalue our buses
and take all our money :lol: :lol: :lol:
 
T5 scene won't devalue our buses imo in fact they will only increase the value
I took my van to a local classic car show at the weekend in Liverpool where I live & I have to say she was probably the most popular exhibit there.
Including 2 splitties.
People just love them especially children I was genuinely shocked at the reaction.

I suppose the rarity adds value, as a 68/69 compared to crossovers, different again, to me this is why i brought the early bay model as there has to be less of them than some split's manufactured for 10 years ( i know there subtle difference as well) earlies and the crossover are visually different over less than 5 years.

although some friends cant tell the difference between mine and a Brazilian :shock:

as for the models Westy, Devon etc. I love them all, just nice i suppose too know that i got into it before it was too late i couldn't afford one now.

but isnt that going to push the whole thing into the rich investor market and kill off the scene, i dream of owning a 23 window samba to sit beside the westy but it is just never going to happen now, and seeing one driven to a show and camped in, no way.

maybe i should look at a commer :oops:

I seriously doubt the values of an appreciating classic vehicle that has practical uses and a huge following will reduce in the near future!
The T4/T5 builders van scene is an emulation of of the classic bus appeal for the mass day van market and although I understand why they are popular have you seen the price of a converted T5? They were for sale at DATC for way over £35,000 and that was for a used ex demo vehicle! And that price only goes one way once you have bought it!

There's an early bay owner on this forum who always drives and camps in his 23W Samba, in fact most of the barndoor owners in the UK are pretty hardcore users and campers :D

EB Westys may be getting dear but they aren't beyond useable - yet!

As for any bubble bursting ... don't hold your breath ... there's no great untapped supply of them anywhere now, prices may well flatten off periodically but there's no reason to see them fall.
 
A couple of weeks back we met the owners of my previous
Westy which I sold to them back in the early nineties
The bus was a clean solid and original
It had a perfect unspoilt interior
Within a short period of time they had destroyed it
Hand painted it pink and let it fall into disrepair
They said that they wish they still had it
When asked why they said

Well they've gone up in value haven't they!
It still annoys me to this day that I sold it to them
no real interest in the vehicle
just the money
