Bearing noise from I think passenger side/left , jacked up and removed the wheel, removed the circ clip
that holds the speedo cable in place, removed the dust cap, undid the removed the bolt using hex/allen key.
This is where the problems started, tried to loosen the clamp nut, came loose up to a point then tightened up again ,still going the same way??????????????????
From what I can ascertain and feel it seems that the clamp nut or  the spindle has a stripped thread.

Not very sure so have ordered a new clamp nut , bearings kit to replace.
Any one had the same experience or any ideas?
All help gratefully received.

And if you've removed the bolt completely, bear in mind that the clamp is then free to expand as it tightens and effectively 'jump' across the threads.

Thanks for the reply's. The problem was that either way I turned it , it tightened up.
I did have the bolt in place. ??????????? Any more help?

How tight did it get? Like not turnable? The nut may have permanently deformed and it will therefore get tighter as it passes over the threads that have never been clamped to or have never seen any loading.

Short update . The clamp nut came off without to much resistance fortunately.(PHEW)
Replaced the front wheel bearings and changed the clamp nut for my own piece of mind.
Put the old one in the tool box....

After the new bearings have been replaced , does anyone know how much movement you can feel ?
Or is it tighten up feel resistance back off half a turn, make sure no resistance?
