I want to change the crankshaft pulley on my 1776 for one with a timing scale on it. But I have heard stories of some shattering under load.

Which would be the best make to go for?

When your engine was built was the bottom end a fully balanced unit, if yes then don't change it as it will be out of balance

There expensive but the best IMO are Gene Berg. I have a Berg equaliser counterweight on my 2110, pretty certain you can got not counterweight versions too. As for balancing, the new pulley can be matched to the old 1. That's how you get around changing clutch pressure plates on a balanced engine ;)

Still sounds like a waste of time and money ( sounding like my dad )

Sometimes I struggle to believe the bullshit answers on this forum. I see lots of questions posed only to see replies from so called experts, who seem only to be interested In confusing us laymen. Why can't anyone answer a straight forward question?

Never heard of a crank pully breaking . Newer ones are machined from billet
Only ever heard of oil leakage probs with the newer style

I have fitted a few of these pulleys and never had a problem. The ones I have fitted were from GSF. Just make sure that your alternator/dynamo pulleys lines up. You may have to slightly move generator on pedestal.

Where was the bullshit answer you talk of in the posts above yours ?
Also at what point did anyone in the posts above yours state they were experts ?

If your reply is not in relation to replies on this thread then it is fairly irrelevant to the OPs question

This forum is one of the great things about vw earlybay ownership. We shouldn't be attacking others advice - I csnt see anything on here out of the ordinary.

A rusty crusty original is way better than an oblongotta krome piece of shite from mexico. Just reference marks on a stock steel pulley fixed about $436 worth of bs I went through.
