the bloody steering wheel, column tube and steering gearbox to get to the damn negative wire connection tab for the horn?

Thats what Bentley and Haynes manuals say, very bad design if you have to remove all that stuff just to get to it :x

just coming to the end of my list of to do things for preparation for tuesdays MOT and thought i best test the horn and guess what it didnt bloody work, found the negative wire that should be connected to the bottom of the steering column tube has snapped off from its connector.

Looks like i will have to pop down to toolstation in the morning to get a gear/hub puller as can't shift the steering wheel.

Just done this job on a Beetle - havent done it on my bus yet so I don't know if its the same.. You can tie a bit of wire to the end of the old wire and pull it through the colloum end so you have a new wire. We tried this but the horn was still intermittent depending where the steering wheel was.. To get it MOT'd, we ended up by-passing the steering coloum and wiring a circuit to a red button on the dash.

Just replaced mine. As above comments attach a new and pull it through. To give more room at the bottom of the column undo the 2 bolts and also the 4 crosshead bolts from the column to the underside of the dash. Then you can pull the whole column and wheel up by about 20mm to give enough room at the rubber joint to pull a new cable through.

I've just done this too, thought i'd never get the steering wheel off without a puller, but this is how i did it:

I undid the nut holding the wheel, but left it part way on. Then soak the spline area with a penetrating oil. Come back the next day and pull up on one arm of the steering wheel whilst pushing down on the other, keep swapping sides. I was doing this for a good 10 - 15 mins and getting sweaty  , anyhow it just popped! Taking the column off is pretty easy after that.

That was actually quite easy to sort once the steering wheel was off (with the help of a 3 leg hub puller), just the 4 screws and 2 bolts, lifted the column tube enough to get to the earth tab, put new spade connector on, connected up, tested and all worked so put back together, i even found out why i couldnt get high beam to work, one of the earth wires had become detached on the indicator stalk switch, soldered that on and now i have high beam :D .
