hi everyone sorry for asking this, this is the first time i've had an aircooled and after getting the engine running there's a few noises i'm not happy about yet some ppl who have seen it say this is how they sound?

any opinions?

I know it needs a belt

cheers

Ben

that doesn't sound good!

Could be the valves hitting the pistons? have you checked on the valve clearances, could be worth checking them! :)

Have you done a service on it? If the valve clearances are not correctly set they will clatter quite loudly.

As others - I'd check valve gaps/rocker assembly, the higher pitched clattery sound I had when one of my valves had worked loose and was bouncing around inside the rocker cover

cheers guys just ordered a feeler gauge, new rocker covers and gaskets may aswel if they're coming off anyway tidy it up a bit

thanks for all your comments been a great help should be done by tuesday i'll let you know.....

what feeler would everyone recommend been told 0.04 (book) but someone else said this is too tight and should be 0.06??

I'd have a go at the valves, but I'd spend a second and reach around and have a look/feel
at you fan itself, it may have come loose and be clanging against the tin. (Please try this with the engine off!) also yes .06 gap. What book are you going by?

got an old AUTOBOOKS worksop manual fo the baywindow :) it does say between 0.04 and 0.06 :)

thanks for the suggestion i'll have a look at the fan too :)

hey everyone finally got a chance to sort out the belt got it nice and tight (1/4 inch play) and now to tackle the knocking!!

just want some thumbs up, i'm not very mechanically minded so this is time to learn....

turned the engine to open up no.1 is this correct.....

the rocker covers came off and went to check the the valves to see if they had any play in them....

the furthest one doesn't move and the next one to it had slight play...does this mean that they're too tight?

hope this post makes sense?

cheers

Ben

You need feeler guages, but I confirm you have it right and they are too tight - one is anyway.

thanks man, i have a feeler gauges from just campers but they only do 0.05 then up to 1.0!! i need 0.06

i'll pop to partco tomoro
I think you're getting mixed up between thou of inch and fractions of mm's. Sounds like you feelers are in mm so the gauge you want is 0.15mm.

Hey everyone, i've just reset the valves to 0.15mm..... (cheers zed bed) :D

2 of them were really tight to where i couldn;t get the feeler gauge in!! havin sorted this i put the rockers on a tried to fire it up and it struggled for a bit when it eventually fired it idled really slowly then when accelerating it picks up really slow!!

have i done anything wrong?

cheers

How do we know?
very slow pick-up could be big inlet side air leak. The rubber boots on the manifold?Have you checked points/set timing?
You sound like this van been off the road? How fresh is the petrol.
Need more background...

sorry man, as you ay of noticed this is all new to me :)

right the van idled fine before adjusting the valves and accelerated ok too it has been sat for 4 years, I've emptied the fuel and put fresh in, done an oil change and plugs are new....

i'm useless really

so check for leaks? i'll do that now

this is how it sounds now

Ouch - switch it off!

You need to go round the valves again I'd say. I think you went wrong somewhere.

agreed!! will do tomoro, so gutted, it wont even fire up now just turns over...at least they're not too tight!!

thanks for your help man......sorry if i'm coming across stupid!!! ( I AM....)

see how it goes tomoro

On a safety note ... your fuel filter looks dark and your fuel lines look hard and have no clamps ( you dont want a fuel leak in a engine bay :msn4: ) they could do with changing and the filter needs to be moved this should really be placed out of the way underneath by the gearbox with the correct size fuel pipe and clamps... it would be worth renewing from tank to pump ...pump to carb if the age of the fuel pipe is unknown ...and use proper fuel clamps at joins ... It's a a fairly straight forward job and will cost less than £15 ;)

If you need anymore help don't hesitate to ask we all here to help :D

Back to the pics of the dizzy, that doesn't look like where mine is at No 1 TDC (but I'm running an SVDA and that looks like an 009). Are you sure it's lined up to the notch on the dizzy body? (And the pully lined up to the TDC mark). You need No. 1 on TDC for the right adjustment. If you are not sure about the pully marks, then it's a case of finding TDC using methods mentioned on other threads on here (I use a chopstick :)).

Cheers,
Nick
