engine bar bolt holes

Got my engine from Graham L this afternoon :mrgreen: But it needs the holes drilled and threads cut for the engine mount bar.

What size threads are they and how deep do I go? Gonna clean it up and do this tomorrow. Or should I just get the adaptor kit?

I put the adapter kit on, it wasn't a great fit and the case needed a bit grinding off. Fit's ok now but expect a bit of work to get it on at first

"To make your case universal you can drill and tap the bosses cast into the beetle case:

There are 3 holes, I'll refer to them as 1, 2, and 3 left to right. 1 and 3 are along the same plane, 2 is a little over 71mm below that.

If you make a template, draw a line 190mm long mark hole #1 center 5mm from the left end of the line measure 178mm along the line from hole #1 center and mark hole #3 center.

1) Scribe an arc below the line from hole #1, 104mm

2) Scribe an arc below the line from hole #3, 125mm

3) Where these arcs cross is hole #2

#1 is M10 x 1.5 x 70 stud. The hole is 22mm deep, 8.5mm drill bit (or 21/64")
#2 is M8 x 1.25 x 55 stud. The hole is 28mm deep, 6.8mm drill bit (or 17/64")
#3 is M10 x 1.5 x 70 stud. The hole is 28mm deep, 8.5mm drill bit (or 21/64”)"

Not being funny but are you sure the holes are not there?, its an AS41 case which I think are drilled as standard and it came out of a bus :? :? :? :?
 
It always surprises me the adaptor kits work.

When you consider that on an early bay there is no intermediate mounting on the gearbox - hence the rear support bar bears 50% of the total weight and torque forces of the engine and gearbox. To put all those forces through the oil pump bolts makes me shudder. :lol:

Personally I would always drill and tap the blank bosses - as long as there are some.
 
Bizarrely I only had two out of three lugs on my case so that's how the bus
is running right now (missing the left hand M10 one). In fact since I only had two
I druilled them moth for M10 and enlarged the hole on the moustache bar.

Note that the case metal is very soft so a hand-held drill is OK if you go steady.
remember to grease your tap so as not to 'tear' the thread too.

The left hand one alos fouled on the full-flow outlet since I used a straight out
barbed fitting. see

mines an as41 and not drilled - they also come out of late beetles which i guess is where mines from.
I'm gonna dril mine next week - but i'll prob drill and tap one hole then use the engine bar as a template

The right hand hole is there but no thread and the others aren't. I've only had a quick look but I'm pretty sure there not. Unless they are snapped off inside the block, not that thats a problem :mrgreen:

Hi Graham

I've had a close look at that engine tonight and I don't think I'll be able to use it, the distributor drive is seized solid :?
Although, saying that the bottom end turns over freely and is smooth. Could it have sheered off inside the case?

proberly not fully down then ,they get stuck on oil crud build up and can be a bitch to get out .try lots of wd40 or solvant to free it up.can you turn it with screw driver?worth a try.
