That should be ok, block off the hole as its near the exhaust so an air getting sucked in will be hot.
The only other thing that might cause hot running is a lean fueling carb but if the carb picks up ok when accelerating its probably not that.
Try setting you tick over mixture screw to base setting 2.5 to 2.75 turns out from home the reset tick over speed using the air screw (larger of the two), if its lean on tick over that will cause a bit of heat build up but only when idling.
