Just trying to narrow down what's wrong, any replies would be very appreciated.

Symptoms are,

Losing loads of oil when hot, poor compression, oil up the back of the bus after a run and all over the engine bay, burning oil smell obviously.

Could this be many other things other than piston rings?? If it's piston rings what sort of money am I looking at to get fixed?

Thanks

Certainly sounds like piston rings, are you burning black smoke ? If the oil is bypassing the piston rings it would run rough and have black smoke. Could also be the seals on your rocker covers are shot and oil I'd leaking when hot and under pressure could also be you have a damaged push rod tube or seals

If you have less of compression it's worth considering a top end rebuild, it's pretty cheap £100 or so if you do it yourself

How much blow-by are you getting on the breather tube? If more than just a small flow of air, then your cylinders/piston rings are not sealing, which might be time for a rebuild.

Losing oil everywhere can be a symptom of high blow-by caused by either worn cylinders/pistons/rings or if you have a restrictive breather pipe/elbows/fittings to the air cleaner or else.

I suggest a leak down test first, if it shows normal leak down then you might have a breather blocked.

Just want to say thanks for taking the time to reply. Problem was a leaking oil cooler and it's all sorted now.

Thanks again
