Hi all just trying to detemine the normal running temp for an early bay, we have just picked up our "new" 69 devo running a Remtech 1776cc motor on the Motorway at about 3750rpm/ 4000 she was running at 95 to 100/105 degrees C. The motor set up includes a deep sump and an Empi remote cooler/fan setup. Bearing in mind it was quite cool this weekend is this normal (PS when it rained (a lot!) the oil temp dropped to 75.

Is this normal?

Regards
Nick

75 sounds a bit on the low side. Do you have a stock thermostat fitted?

I doubt it would be anything to worry about, but 95 would be preferable to 75 I believe.

I think also 90-105 is ideal. Too low and some of the unpleasant combustion products start to hang around in the cylinders longer than they should, although I don't know to what severity at 75*C. The oil might also be a little too thick, if it's a cool-climate oil particularly... but that's speculation on my part.

My Splitty was running oil at 120*C on a 30*C day on the highway here. I think that's too hot. No special cooling systems on it though. 1776 too.

Cheers, A.

hi,sounds about right to me ,1641cc in mine runs about the same temps where about in leics are you ,8ballbug and i are startin aclub up in new year in hinckley area .

Hi Lemonyellow were in Narborough so were jut down the road, PS thanks for everyones feedback and does anyone know why the autometer temp gauge has such odd gaps between the markings no 5 degree gaps for those boys! Bizzare!

Thank
Nick

After more extensive use of the van I am finding that the oil temp guage does not much above 70 to 85 on half hour runs over mixed A and B roads and a tendancy to be a hesitant in it power at the 1500 2000 rpm mark after such a run. Any thoughts?

I have an inline thermostat between external filter>cooler
blocks off cooler untill needed , which is rare on short trips in winter
Not many places seem to sell them this is the one link I found

Thanks for the feedback and the link, will try the boiling water trick. Harlequin where exactly did you fit the in line thermostat (does it need support) and did you have to drop the oil?

Regards
Nick

I put the thermostat about 6 inchs past the oil filter
as its alloy it doesn't weigh much, I used a couple of
hose clamps bolted to the chassis rail to hold it in place
