I currently have a 4-tip Monza installed by the previous owner that is reaching the end of its short useful (read: useless) life and want to get a better exhaust. Firstly let me make it clear my understanding is limited to a muffler and a header. I do not know the difference between a 4 in 1 and a merged header or what to look for in an exhaust (other than Stainless Steal lasts long). I am not after a Python or top end performance stuff but would like something a little better than standard.

Then I would like to reinstate heat exchangers but don't now what I need other than the exchangers themselves; 'J-Tubes'?

Hi, I'm sure you will some more knowledgable peeps than me to answer but to start you off if you don't have heat exchangers fitted then you will already have J pipes (named due to the shape) fitted with your monza. You will need to have a crawl underneath to see if you need any other heater bits i.e. flexi tubes from heatexchanger to "Y" heater pipe and poss cables as well.
If your budget isn't too tight a stainless single quiet pack would look nice and deffo better breathing than the monza.

Cheers Nick.

I think the advice there to get yourself a stainless single quiet pack and appropriate stainless header would serve you well. This way you can have a nice sound, good looks and will last.

The heaters are a case of looking underneath to see what is there and whats missing (maybe have a look at someone else's og set up to check. Its really a pair of heat exchangers, pipes underneath, and some hoses to connect to the fan shroud (usually comes with that type of exhaust).

I like the muffler from vwspeedshop, check it out, not cheap though

IMO, the stock exhaust is probably the best quality steel exhaust out there. Given enough heatproof paint, it'll last a very long time.

The quietpack ones tend to rot very quickly.

If I could afford it, I'd have a Bluebird Customs Stainless stock system on my bus right now ;) - apparently it is a bit loud though?

The only thing I don't like about my (new, thus no air leaks) stock system is it isn't loud enough

you will also need to consider if you intend to fit a tow bar at some point in time, as this will effect you exhaust also. A single pack an gets in the way, standard is ok, and side exit is ok.

Cheers for the pointers.

I have just sold my towbar so no intentions to go down that route for the foreseeable future.

Where can I find a diagram to show the somponenets for the heater system to see what I should have? I have two flexihoses but they are only attached at one end, going forward from there I don't know what else I need...
