I have had my coilovers on for a few weeks now, and it seems that every now and then I get strange knocking noises, I think I have narrowed it down to the grub screw that holds the A arms on allowing the arms to move, the instructions say to do them tight but still allow them to move freely, so i did them up tight then wound the grub screw back a quater of a turn and locked the nut tight, this seemed to work for a few miles, but now the knocking has come back!!

Has any one else had this problem ?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Mark

I had that noise for a bit mark i put mine on about 6 weeks ago but its gone now and i didnt wind my grubs back what drop you running

did you wind the grub screw in teight?

Running a a low drop, not sure what it is, but its lo enuf lol

your coilovers i ment not your complete drop if your your using 2-4 4-5 etc im running 4-5 and its sooooooooo bumpy if your using drop spindles with these whats the ride like ? and i wound my grubs right in

yeah running 4-5 but with a 2" extender at the top and 2.5" dropped spindles, ride is good, but then I'm used to it being a bit bumpy, all my cars have been slammed lol

I'm going t wind the grub screw in tonight see how that does.

Thanks

Mark

I've not had any knocking, my grub screws are tight too so this could be your problem. Did Si make you the 2" adaptors Axel?

looks like thats the problem then, yeah he did make me the adaptors, they work well too.

Thanks for the info, i'll tighten them up tonight, I've got a drive to Tenby tomorrow, about 100 miles, my furthest distance in the bus so far!!

I'm really considering the Red 9 kit, is it much work to fit???

Cheers
Karl

when comparing it to fitting beam adjustors, its a piece of p~ss.

No welding and you don't even have to take the beam off. A good afternoons work and you should have it all fitted.

Hey Axel

Interesting about your knocking sound. My van has Red9 fitted by the PO, have been trying to locate source of knocking for couple of months now with no joy.
Whats the deal with the grub screws/ locking nuts? Should the screws be tight or tightened then backed out? How far? Sounds a bit hit and miss if they are ment to be loose?
Any info would be good will check mine when i get it off the ramps (fighting an oil cooler leak at the moment)

Thanks

Interesting thread on a similar topic:

Explains the working of the grub screws, and all the associated perils!

well i did my trip to Tenby, and still have the nocking, it only seems to happen at low speeds, I'm still not sure what it is, i'm going to grease up inside the beam and see if that does any thing, one think i have noticed is that the shocks seem to be sliding to one side of the bush! I'm not sure why.

Watch this space, i will find out whats knocking!!!

no

The center grub screw had come loose allowing the bars to move from side to side. I simply tightened the grub screw and that sorted it.

Ive been having a random knock since fitting mine. It turned out to be the upper ball joint on the front hub. My grub screws are up tight til nipped but not tight tight. Thats how I read it as being. I think if you do them really tight you may squash the end of the rod so it cannot rotate properly.

Glad you sorted your knocks guys, my shocks are sliding off the bushes too, put a mudguard washer either side so hopefully that should keep them in check.

I have fitted an inch adaptor on the shock to raise it, but either i didnt fit it right or im missing the point :? I took the top mount off and screwed the adaptor in then refitted, but as i see it the adaptor only compresses the piston further down the inside of the shock, the ride hight is the same. Im guessing its supose to stiffen up the damping but with the dial turn fully clockwise i still scuff the tubs? Help me out here guys.

Really scared of this design. I'm an aerospace design engineer and I can't imagine the sheer load of a 1200kg moving object riding on 2 m10 bolts!

Anybody had these fail?

Can of worms mate,

Im good friends with Si from red9 so a little biased, but i have never heard of any bolt failures. I run the easy rider kit as do 100's of others with no issues.

I am an aircraft engineer so was sceptical too about the failure rate but after 2 years have had no problems and yet to hear about anyone having failure issues.
