Hi,

My engine on my 71 crossover is out at the moment so I could get access to change all the fuel/breather hoses. I have noticed that the gearbox thrust bearing looked worn, so I am replacing it. Does it need additional grease so that it moves freely back and forth (ooh Matron! ) or does it just get installed as is?

Thanks

If it was me, id clean the shaft that the bearing slides on and put a thin film of grease on there. Cant do any harm.
Just a thin film though. If you put loads on and it makes its way onto the friction surface you could end up with clutch judder/slip.
Id replace the whole clutch, not just the bearing.

Is replacing the friction plate enough, or should I change whole assembly?

I've always been under the impression that the last thing you want on the shaft is any kind of grease, as it will just attract all the clutch dust and just get jammed up over time?

Cheers all.

I will be taking off the clutch this weekend. Hopefully all I need is the friction plate.

After taking the clutch off, I will take your advice and get the whole assembly replaced.

Clutch successfully changed - glad I bought a torque wrench. So back to grease - does anyone add a little to the face of the thrust bearing?
