for those that do not know the fuel filter fits underneath next to the fuel tank outlet I know its hard to get at that's why twats fit them in the engine bay after the fuel pump so you have a mini fuel bomb in your engine bay not saying anyone on here has done that just letting you safety minded people know

Ron,
Have you a picture of its location please? My stock engine had it fitted in the engine bay, but I was thinking of getting a glass one fitted, situated in the top left corner of the engine bay.

where the fuel pipe exits the tank it clips to the floor which is usually rusted of just clamp the pipe and cut it then place fuel filter in pipe not forgetting the clips its a little awkward but much safer and it filters the fuel before it gets to the pump and carb ;)

I always fit my fuel filter in the engine bay before the fuel pump. Easy to change and easy to make sure that connections and pipes are always in good condition. :D (this location works for me, and has done for the last 25 years.......but I do keep an eye on pipe condition etc regularly)

Never known a plastic filter split or leak (but thats just my experience)

Mines in the bay at the moment, but after seeing so many burnt out carcasses of buses lately il be relocating it out of harms way.

My filter is under there, but have leant a lesson I think. Next time I'm under there an inline stop tap gets fitted before the filter as petrol running down my arms wasn't fun. One of these. http://bit.ly/19vEjON" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Under the bus is best, lobbie on here lost half his bus to it being in the engine bay, they are not pressure rated so a no no after the pump, and they split and leak and petrol pouring over a hot engine is never good

FYI- the glass ones are often total ****. the threads where they unscrew are messy and they can burst.
A decent quality plastic job, situated under the fuel tank, will be fine.
And honestly, you don't really need to check it that often. I check and replace mine once a year or so, it's always perfectly useable, but I do it out of routine.

Well thank you for advice on that, all of you, its made me think. The stock engine I had always smelt of petrol, I drove it down the road after I got it, opened up the engine bay and there was literally a fountain of petrol flowing  . I have since got a new engine which I have yet fitted, but will certainly add the filter where it ought to be, (not glass one).

Thank you. 8)

I'm really sorry to be thick... and sorry to open an old thread - but you always run the risk with a search facility.

I can't find my filter... it isn't in the engine bay and am now thinking it must be elsewhere - thats if one was fitted when the weber twin carbs were fitted.... I read this thread but being unfamiliar am not entirely sure of the location suggested just past the fuel tank. Are you suggesting it can be under the van where the pipe emerges before connecting to the flexible pipe ? A photo would be brilliant

Thanks for any additional help.

My filter is in the engine bay, and is made of tempered glass and if I were to be called a "****" to my face I can't see the person saying it being pleased with my response or reaction.

I choose to have it in the engine bay as I replace my filter every year along with all my fuel lines.

The fuel filter I have installed is proven and reliable - from Motorsport applications under much higher pressures and demands my standard 1600 engine could ever put it under. It is less likely to rupture compared to the plastic one as they are more susceptible to the heat fluctuations within the engine bay.

Definitely not in the engine bay. Got mine up on the chassis leg before the firewall so if it does let go it'll leak on to the ground and not a hot engine!

I bumped in to a guy once at a petrol station who had just bought a bus and wanted me to give it a once over. The filter was after the pump and the fuel pipes were just pushed on, no clips, nothing. They came off in my hand and he was away to drive around 250 miles home!
