I have a 69/70 1600 early bay.
Recently it has been very bad for exhaust fumes in the vehicle. I've had a good look round and can't see any obvious issues.
Please can any one help, it's getting worse and I'm getting concerned.
Thank you in anticipation.

Are you running heat exchangers, and if you are, what condition are they in? That would be my first port of call

Hi, I'm running heat exchangers. They look ok externally but with some corrosion. Is there any way I can check these before changing them ?.

If your HX's are damp with oil on the outside it will also be inside and you're probably smelling burning oil.
If not, they do go around the silencer clamps so double check here. Not known them to hole anywhere else.

Looking at HX's, they look to have gone around the front clamps and do have oil outside. Left side also looks to have a hole in the frontal downward bend. I'll have a look at some replacements.
Thx.

I had similar problems. My exhaust was a little short and so wasn't venting clear of the bus. I also put a new seal on the rear door.

This made a lot of difference for me.

All, I have got the HX's and about to fit. Can somebody please give me a clue on connecting the heater cables ?.
They are there and free moving but the kit I've got from VW Hertitage has alsorts of bits in it & the HX has got two connecting positions. A short direct connection & a long one with some type of linkage to fit.
Please help this is getting like the Krypton Factor !.

Thx,

Harvey.
