Hi
Can anyone recommend a Garage around the Edinburgh area please.

The fan and the alternator have become disconnected according to the AA and he is saying the engine needs to come out. I am at a loss to understand how this has happened as the engine is only two years old.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Darren

The problem with what you're describing is that THAT fan cools the whole engine. The idea of it being disconnected is disconcerting- how long did you drive like that before you stopped?

IF we assume that no damage has occurred to the engine, then it may be an engine out job, it may not. If the nut has just come loose- totally possible- then you should be able to reach around the back of the fan housing and do it back up with a 36mm socket.

However, it's probable that there's been some damage to the fan. So, you don't need to remove the engine- purely because we know that the fan's off. If it weren't, you probably would have to... Or at least, removing the alternator would be much more difficult.

Disconnect the 4 screws holding the back plate of the alternator to the fan housing and the strap around the alternator. Remove the carb, probably! also pretty much anything that gets in the way... And you may well be able to wangle the alternator out of there. If the fan is knackered, replace it. Check out the washers etc., making sure they're all in place and fit the fan INSIDE the fan housing, allowing you to put the alternator back in. Tighten that nut up really tight though- you don't want a repeat of your experience!

I replaced my fan while engine was still in because it was missing a few fins.............. Total nightmare
Fan contacting tin wear over and over refitting, I re did it five times!.
Now given up, hopefully VWJIM is going to fix it for me and I'll be happy again, I just have to wait for mid August

The woodruff key is on the front, not the back. There are two flats on the shaft on the back that keep it locked in, much like you've got on an angle grinder.

Also, Woodruff would be a great name for a dog.
