Hi all

I have spent another 6 hours cleaning and am pleased with the progress.

The front seats and all cab floor mats plus the retro carpet have all been scrubbed and cleaned.

I have also cleaned the windows and fitted one in the sliding door, but how does it fix / stay in place? Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Very nice find - that bus will go through an MoT on bodywork. Please don't lower it - keep it stock!

You have a very original Devon Devonette similar to my 72. I have a few spare bits you might be able to use like arm rest and table fixings. Your rear cushions have probably been recovered but the curtains are original. The louvred windows you are fitting are Westfalia and screw in from the inside with a large number of 3mm self tapping screws around the edge (E in the pic above) - you will see the holes in the window frame. Devon fitted a different type of louvred window that was split into two halves. BTW the rear cupboard above the engine bay did not originally have a door on it - yours has been fitted by one of the POs. It's actually quite rare to find a Devonette without some sort of door fitted to this cupboard, not least because without a door everything falls out!

Did you find it in East Devon, by chance?
 
Hi all

Another 6 hours have been spent cleaning.

The time was spent hoovering the curtains, and the cab area, cleaning the walk through rubber mat, and polishing the cab floor.

With this done I then re-gunked all shuts and locks, then washed them all off, dryed them and WD40'd the floor, shuts etc (another 2 Trade Size Cans used).

I also sprayed the dash with Show Shine, just to get an idea of how it will look when cleaned properly and to feel that I was getting somewhere.

I hope to give the outside a good clean soon and then will put on a cover which has just arrived.

Hi all

I had more free time today so spent 8 hours washing the outside. I managed to get rid of all the Compound, T-Cut and Mer that was in the cracks and on the rubbers. I also WD'd inside the rear vents and again under all arches after the good wash.

Some of the windows have been cleaned inside and out, along with front door cards. I have also given the sun visors their first wash.

I am looking forward to the end of the cleaning now and I know it is not much longer.

Today has been enjoyable but I suddenly felt that I'd had enough.

You lucky you , that is an awesome find , I did see this thread whet you first found it but never tought the bus would be this good, you are doing an awesome job keep it up.

I'm not a fan of the rear lights and doglegs but they are small details to most and with an original bus like this, once it has been polished up, shiny wheels and dropped, people won't be looking at the rear lights (Well not all of us).

We shouldn't get too tied down with how early something is, or you could end up wanting for earlier all of the time eg:

72 - not sure about the rear lights....
71 - flared arches....
70 - I want split pattern beam
69 - I would prefer push button door handles.....
68 - Cool but it's not a split
67 Split - looks like a bay from the back
60 - love the small rear window and bullets but its not a Barndoor
54 - Nice barndoor......but it doesn't have piano hinged 1/4 lights
52 - Got the 1/4 lights but theres a guy on the Samba with a 1949 prototype

Sell the house, wife and kids and get that 1949 prototype, BUGGER - it drives like shit, can't see anything when I pull up to a junction, I will get linched if I so much as put a sticker in the window....let alone lower it.

I think I'll sell the Barndoor and use the money to buy a house, and an Early bay.......que wife and kids back.... :mrgreen:

Maybe a slight exaggeration but I think you get the gist....

This is a cool bus, and I wish I had found it for under £1k.

THis is the best commentary on the average bus guy that I have ever read. Just as quoted here and by Stephen Stills, "...love the one you're with." I find myself not hunting for the elusive Barndoor or my dream subhatch westy, but rather buying and loving what falls in my lap. I found a 64 crew cab, waited 7 years patiently, and in the end I got it. It's got push buttons, bugger! If it was just made 4 months earlier, icepick handles and 15" wheels... ;) I'm considering selling my 70 single cab to buy a 61 split single cab. After reading this post Jon, I think I'll just keep the 70. I can park it up anywhere, don't have to worry about theft or the occasional shopping cart banging into it in a parking lot. I'll keep it, because it just BARELY has wide 5 wheels. :lol:
 
Hi all

Unfortunately my time has been spent on another major project, so the Camper has hardly had any attention.

However, today the project is nearly finished, so I valeted both the Camper and Bus and have wrapped up the Camper till the Spring.

I remember a few people were asking about covers so below are pictures showing the fit etc (hope this helps).

The wheels are still free so I hope to be able to take the wheels off and do some work over the winter on brakes etc.

Looking forward to the spring....

Scrubbed up and dryed, and then another coating of WD for the Sills, Under the Arches, Bumpers, Cab Floor, Door Shuts etc...for Winter Hiberation -

Hi all

It's been a while since i've done much with the camper.

I've taken the front discs and calipers off ready for some new metal in the spring, adding another 3 hours to the time sheet.

The weather has been very poor though, so not alot else has happened apart from looking in magazines and choosing some new parts.

I have checked the M Plate, and have also ordered up a Birth Certificate from the Volkswagen AutoMuseum.
