quick background

have 68 with a 71/72 beam with a brake booster fitted, the lhs [lhd drivers side] cable hits the edge of the servo, I noticed it just now as the h/brake is on.

the only thing I can think of doing is welding a short guide tube to the booster or to the beam?

anyone else come across this? I have narrowed the beam and the servo is where it was within 5mm, so I can't see how it would clear in a later bus either?

thanks

D

The later bus had a different part at the bottom of the handbrake lever that kept the cables closer together after they left the lever, thus avoiding contact with the servo.

You can either fit the later handbrake and cables or, much easier, you can make a clip out of some very stiff wire that wraps round the two handbrake cables, about 4 inches after they leave the lever, which holds them closer together so they don't foul the servo.

You will probably then need to re adjust the cables, using the screws at the bottom of the lever, to allow for the slight shortening effect of your modification. You can check whether its necessary by seeing if the handbrake travel is excessivly short and whether the rear drums are binding.

If you just leave it the handbrake will still work but it will be uneven because one cable fouls and the other doesn't, thereby shortening the travel on one side.

Let me know if you have any problems.

thanks Trikky

that makes sense actually and I may even have some u-shaped cable clamps that I could make a 'tie' with, I bought new cables so really don't want to swap it all out, plus the rear brakes are still EB and I think it'll be asking for trouble to try and get the late cable to be right for that!!

now that you mention it my 73 did have a different setup....it's at the painters so I can't check, but I think your idea will work fine and it'll mean I'll need to check the cables a tad more regularly but that's no bad thing

I'll make headway today and report back

thanks again
