Would you trust a mate with your bus?

I have this weekend, allowed a mate to take my bus to The Reading Festival and it's been etched by problems since 2 hours after he took it.

collected on Wednesday evening, took me for a 20 mile round trip so he could get used to driving it, all was well, he dropped me off and I waved bye bye to my bus till monday.

Got a phone call on Thursday morning at 06:30, bus would "not come out of 3rd and the gear stick was moving all over the place" Talked him through removing the gear stick & sure enough, the end had come out of the coupling it sits in and the spring pin was missing. Told him to call the AA {as I was stuck at work} who could put it back together {he's more useless than me}

This they did & off he set. However, now & again, when he was moving off, the reverse lights would come on {I presume the selctor plate has been put back the wrong way round}

anyways, he;s made it to Reading & I called this morning to see if things were ok.

He's suicidal as the bus has lost it;s power & won't go up a hill. Says it turns over & starts but doesn't gain any speed or power to get up a hill.

2 questiuons for you

any ideas on the 2nd problem &

was I daft to lend a mate my bus?

ftr, I half expected the bus to be back at mine tonight, it's not so maybe Mr AA was back at it & has got it sorted. I would however, appreciate your ideas on what you may think the problem was.

slipping clutch maybe?, just a guess as im mechanically useless, but if it starts and runs ok, or maybe hes selecting third instead of first if the gearstick has not been put back on correctly? again a guess, im sure someone who knows much more than me will be along to tell you the reason, good luck with it all

Trying to avoid the same situation. The wifes cousin (who lives near enough in the same road as us) has enquired about lending our bay at some time.
I'm not overly keen (read no f'ing chance in hell) but dont think the wife wants to say no to them.
Hasn't been mentioned for a while so hopefully it was just a phase they we're going through

that's part of the problem, my mate is a banker {I said Banker} & barely knows what a steering wheel looks like.

But I had a plan and all bases covered or so I thought.

Serviced recently and it was running like a dream.
just back from the bodyshop {Kustom & Klassic [in Romford] who done a cracking job of the bodywork & paint} She was looking pretty for her trip to Reading}}
took him for a test drive to make sure there were no probs & after 20 miles, thought, he's ready to go solo :lol:
filled her with petrol
filled her with beer

what could possibly go wrong?

next year, i'll be busy when he asks to borrow it. :evil:

the fact I've not heard from him in 24 hours & the bus is not back outside my home, he must have got it sorted.

id rather go to ikea with the wife than lend my bus out

and as for him being suicidal if he was my mate i would of killed him by now anyhow cheeky bugger

id get the aa to get her home safe and you access whats going on then bill your mate !!

it's getting better,

usually, he turns up at Reading after we've arrived & everything is put up etc but since I've not gone this year, he's had to do some donkey work himself.

He's been going to Reading ever since I can remember & i've known John 23 years, anyways, he's got the Kombi into the camper park, it's raining & he's taken 3 hours to put up the awning {JK Hamburg} {I told you he is useless} to find he left the tent pegs at home.

I'd lend my good friends and some family mine - there is one rule

You break it you pay for it to be fixed - wether thats a new engine or suspension.

If my US pal comes across he could happily borrow it - he knows as much as me about buses having had 2 or 3 - knows his way around a bus and how to drive it. Plus if he did break something he'd either be able to fix it OR happily pay to get it fixed.

Also I would insist they arranged their own insurance or covered the cost to be on mine as named driver.

It's only a vehicle!! :lol: [where's the duck for cover smiley]

A work mate offered me serious cash for the loan of my bus for a weekend but
I turned him down flat.

My sister has also hinted about borrowing it for a weekend but I know it would end up
in a simalar situation to yours graeme! :roll:

The problem was, when he got the AA guy out, he's put the gear shift plate on the wrong way round which I'll sort out tonight

but bleedin eck, it's been a wee bit more expensive than even I thought possible.

he's gone & put his legs through the top bunk canvas and left the levelling blocks wherever he was parked so, today, I need

a new shift plate
a new top bunk canvas {anyone know where I can buy the canvas only. I see on JK they do with poles for £40}
new levelling blocks {we're heading up to Southwold tomorrow for a few days before the schools go back}

First of all I would never lend my bus to a none VW owner. A very good mate who has owned vans and knows how to drive them properly I would possibly consider lending it to. But they would be insuring it themselves and also paying for any damage.

I've got to say I think your mate has been quite disrespectful
